NBA, FIBA Discuss Changing Olympics To U-23 Tourney
Sħãlïq™ posted a topic in General NBA Discussion
NBA, FIBA Discussing Changing Olympics To Under-23 Tournament NBA owners are working with FIBA to turn the Olympics into an under-23 tournament, while creating a new World Cup that both would profit from. Jul 30, 2012 - NBA owners, who pay the salaries of every member of Team USA as well as dozens of international players participating in the London 2012 Olympics, aren't big fans of their stars playing in extra games over the summer. They're so displeased with subsidizing a popular tournament and taking a huge amount of risk by releasing players for the Olympics that they're in discussions with FIBA to turn the Olympic men's basketball tournament into an under-23 event. For similar reasons, the men's soccer tournament at the Olympics is an under-23 tournament, though three over-age players are allowed. The NBA owners' concerns seem to have more to do with their international players than their domestic players, because they're less concerned about the medical care that players receive while with Team USA, as well as the judgment of the coaching staff. Three-team trade sends Lopez to Hornets NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The Hornets, Suns and Timberwolves have completed a three-team deal that will send 7-foot center Robin Lopez and forward Hakim Warrick from Phoenix to New Orleans, while moving forward Wesley Johnson and a first-round draft pick from Minnesota to the Suns. Word of the multiplayer trade first broke on Wednesday, though the final version had minor changes. The deal sends the contracts of Jerome Dyson and Brad Miller from New Orleans to Phoenix. Minnesota receives three second-round draft picks in the deal. The acquisition of Lopez fills a need at center for the Hornets, who traded away Emeka Okafor and let Chris Kaman go in free agency. David Stern calls out agent The agent for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard confirmed NBA commissioner David Stern's accusation that Howard's representatives were the sources that provided details of Wednesday's private meeting in Los Angeles with Magic officials. However, the agent said, those representatives did so only after media members were tipped off to the meeting taking place by some other source and out of concern that subsequent reports about the content of the meeting would be inaccurate. "It's very unique, especially if it's driven by a quote source that happens to be Dwight's agent," Stern told USA Today. "'A source in the meeting.' Oh, OK, who might that be?" Stern reportedly did not believe the leak came from the Magic. "No, I don't (think it's GM Rob Hennigan), and I don't think it's (CEO) Alex Martins either," Stern told the newspaper. Howard reiterated to Hennigan during the meeting in Los Angeles that he still wants to be traded and will leave as a free agent after next season. "On the morning prior to Wednesday's supposedly confidential meeting between Dwight Howard and Rob Hennigan, there were media reports stating a meeting was taking place later that same day," wrote agent Dan Fegan of LaGardere Unlimited in an email. "Prior to the actual meeting, Dwight's business manager and I met with Rob, reminded him that we had not requested the meeting, had been reluctant to take it and were concerned that the Magic had leaked that a meeting was taking place.
