Late Goal Helps U.S. Men Earn Tie With Haiti and Win Group in Gold Cup

The United States had only two minutes left Saturday night to avoid its first loss ever in Concacaf Gold Cup group play.

Haiti was heading for its first win over the United States since a 1-0 win in May 1969.

Then midfielder Stuart Holden sent a 25-foot shot past goalkeeper Jean Dominique Zephirin into the upper-right corner in the first minute of second-half injury time, giving the United States a 2-2 tie in its final first-round game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

“We were pushing the whole second half,” said Holden, who also assisted on Davy Arnaud’s goal in the sixth minute. “We kept knocking on the door and the chance fell to me.”

The United States (2-0-1) finished first in Group B and will play El Salvador or the third-place team in Group C on Saturday in Philadelphia. The team is seeking its third straight title in the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean. It improved to 23-0-2 in Gold Cup group play.

Haiti (1-1-1) finished third in the group round and also advanced. (The two best third-place teams move on.)

Haiti pulled ahead in the first four minutes of the second half. Sirin Vaniel tied the match in the 46th minute and Mones Chery gave Haiti the lead three minutes later.

Six of the starting 11 for the United States were making their first national team starts.

“The experience of today will be something that they can draw from,” United States Coach Bob Bradley said. “You use these three games to gain experience. You use these three games to get confident.”

Too bad Mr. Torres had nothing to say two weeks ago when his team came up short.

What does that have to do with anything?

Spain won the Euro Cup playing against Germany, Holland, Russia, Italy, Greece, Sweden, and Germany. The United States is struggling to beat [expletive]ty teams like Haiti in a group with Honduras and Grenada.

And you do have to realize that US had an easier way to the Confederation Cup then Spain or Egypt or Brazil. Do you honestly think US would have made it to the Confederation Cup if they played in Euro or in South America or in Africa, HELL NO!

lol ya, why do people even talk about that game, the US simply just got lucky vs Spain, the USA is a terrible team and lost to Trinidad & Tobago.
