Also, lol, Doug Wilson pulling a Paul Holmgren. Signs Setoguchi to a new contract yesterday, trades him today.

FYI, if you don't get the reference, Paul Holmgren supposedly told Jeff Carter earlier this week he was 100% not getting traded. Just as he told him last year, which prompted Carts to buy a house at the shore, lol.

Couple of more trades, both of which are highway robbery.

Columbus sends Nikita Vilatov to the Senators for a 3rd round pick next season.

Calgary sends Robyn Regher, Ales Kotalik and a 2012 2nd to the Sabres for Chris Butler and Paul Byron.

Seems like the Flames want to officially blow it up and rebuild with this trade, no? Well, they followed this trade up by re-signing Alex Tanguay to a 5 year/$17M contract. That team is an absolute mess.

Kirky looks to be heading to the Milwaukee Admirals to be the head coach. Might be great news for Chet Pickard, who was Carey's backup in Junior and plays a lot like him...until last year. Also, he gets another exciting player in Ryan Ellis who is PK lite and a bunch of great young talent Nashville has drafted.

I'm hearing that Jagr may be back with the Penguins on a one year deal, with the details coming out Friday. Nothing is definite, but it would be cool to see him back there.

However, I think they would become the instant favorites for the Stanley Cup, or at least the favorites out of the Eastern Conference. I think Jagr could still put up 80+ if he returns, and if he plays with Malkin....damn!

Even if they don't sign Jagr, or make any moves at all, I think you can make the argument that they are the favourites for Stanley, assuming nothing crazy happens with the top teams in the league (like a Stamkos offer sheet that TB refuses to match or something like that). All they really need is for Malkin and Crosby to come back healthy and that alone is bigger than any offseason move that any other team can make.

I think if the two of them were healthy this past season that they would've won the cup, although Boston certainly deserved to win it all.

I think they'll be the favorites coming out of the East regardless of signing Jagr or not, but if they do, it just makes it that much more likely.

The Penguins pass my eye test as well. And, three out of the last four Stanley Cup Champions were probably the best team on paper.

The eye test falls into the "paper" thing. Basically, I meant that the best team rarely wins.

And I'd disagree about that. Well, both years that the Red Wings and Penguins played in the Finals, they were probably the two best teams. But those two years aside, I can't think of a champion in the past 10 years that was clearly the most talented team.

The restricted free agency system is broken. An elite 21 year old center gets RFA status and has openly difficult negotiations with his current team, yet doesn't receive any offer sheets from other teams. Not one. You can't tell me that collusion isn't involved here.

It's not broken. It's just helping small market teams stay alive. It's not the best way but I'd rather have lots of stars on different teams than Miami Heating the NHL.

I know. And it does work I guess. It just seems a bit fishy that Stamkos did not receive one offer sheet.

There were some reports that rival GMs told Paul Holmgren that if he offer-sheeted Stamkos and forced the Lightning into either losing him or overpaying to keep him, then the Flyers would get the same treatment for Claude Giroux and James van Riemsdyk down the line. I am sure other teams were warned of this too. Which obviously makes sense, but that is the definition of collusion.

But I suppose there is no way to prevent this.

I don't understand how you really "overpay" a player like Stamkos. If you have to overpay to keep Giroux/Van Riemsdyk then that's the cost of doing business, or you let em walk and take the picks. If you can get or have a chance to get Stamkos, you do it, simple. All this niceties bullshit is stupid, this is a competition. Numerous teams should have submitted offer sheets by now as far as I am concerned.

It pisses me off Burke hasn't made an offer. Just like it pisses me off that he gave 2 firsts for Kessel based on principle, when he didn't have to.

Well, the Lightning have way more leverage in negotiations if there are no offer sheets on the table. It is easier to accomplish anything if there is no competition, obviously.

But if the reports are true, and GM's were telling each other that they'd screw each other in the future if offer sheets are/aren't submitted on certain guys, then that is collusion and something should be done to fix it.

For the record, I am happy the Flyers did not send Stamkos an offer sheet.

Haha, Dan Carcillo is awesome. Calls out the Canucks in his introductory news conference. I bet Blackhawk fans love him already (and this is why we loved him here).
