Blazers eye Danny Ferry as general manager

Recommended Posts

A trusted NBA source insists the Trail Blazers have Spurs vice president of basketball operations Danny Ferry at, or near, the top of their list of candidates to replace their general manager, Rich Cho.

Cho on Monday became the second Blazers GM in the past year to be fired by club owner Allen, the Seattle-based multi-billionaire and Microsoft co-founder.

Any team that wants to put together a championship-contending roster should consider Ferry, a smart executive whose experience as general manager of the Cavaliers makes him uniquely qualified.

During his five years in Cleveland, Ferry worked for a billionaire owner with a big ego, Dan Gilbert. He also dealt with a superstar, LeBron James, who had a team of sycophants behind the scenes second-guessing and undercutting the GM. Still, Ferry built a team that made it to one NBA Finals and posted the NBA’s best regular-season record in back-to-back seasons.

Don't think it really matters who is named GM because the Blazers made it apparent that he would just be a figurehead. Regardless, Ferry worked hard during his tenure in Cleveland would and would, at the very least, be a nice addition to the Portland front office even if he doesn't have much say.

He'd be a good replacement for Portland, but at the same time, do they really want to add a guy who's been known to spend freely and not get much good play out of those guys he brings in? If he comes in and just stays patient with the roster that's great, but if he tries to rush things like he did with Cleveland, then they could have a problem.

Eh. You can tell he cares deeply about winning games and is willing to do whatever he can to do just that (even though sometimes it leads to moves like trading for Jamison etc). If a world class organization like the Spurs can see that and promote him to VP then he honestly can't be THAT bad of a general manager.
