Sħãlïq™
With perhaps their best-ever team, can Canucks galvanize nation? http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/canada-gold-cup.jpg Having failed to qualify for every FIFA World Cup since their only tournament appearance in Mexico in 1986, the team hasn’t exactly captured the imagination of the Canadian public. Every four years, the streets of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are filled with large crowds of people celebrating other national teams in the World Cup, with the Maple Leafs conspicuous in their absence.http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/06/gold-cup-crucial-moment-hand-canada
Sħãlïq™
Despite 4-0 win, Jamaica not satisfied http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/johnson-jamaica.jpg CARSON, Calif. — Can winning by four goals end up a disappointment? For a Jamaican side with aspirations of greatness at the Gold Cup, Monday’s performance was just that. The Reggae Boyz tallied four goals on their Caribbean rivals Grenada in a convincing victory at the Home Depot Center. Perhaps testament to the high expectations of the Reggae Boyz — who have said their goal for the Gold Cup is at least qualifying for the semifinals — the match was considering something of a let-down. The gap in class between the two sides may have been huge, yet the Reggae Boyz squandered numerous chances to extend their lead. Following the match, Jamaica head coach Theodore Whitmore was blunt in his assessment of the Reggae Boyz performance.http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/07/gold-cup-despite-4-0-group-b-win-jamaica-not-satisfied

Sħãlïq™
Good read on Jozy: Gold Cup: Altidore finds redemption in US win http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/altidore-hainault.jpg DETROIT — What a difference a couple of days make. Coming out of Saturday’s loss to Spain, the US national team seemed to be a jumble of question marks: How would the side overcome a thumping just days before opening up their 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign? Who would be the central pairing in defense? Would striker Jozy Altidore, who struggled to make an impact against the Spanish, start up top? The answers came early on Tuesday. The US came out flying, Altidore started and scored in the 15th minute, and the entire side turned in a confident performance in a 2-0 win over Canada.http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/08/gold-cup-altidore-finds-redemption-us-win

With goals from Luis Tejada and Gabriel Gomez, the Panamanians handed the USA their first-ever loss in Gold Cup group play and the first Panama victory in any competition over the USA, which entered the match holding a 6-0-2 record against the Central Americans.http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/06/11/gold-cup-panama-pull-upset-hand-usa-first-ever-group-stage-loss

Jamaica, who join Mexico and Panam as the lone qualifiers to the next round, now stand atop Group B with a maximum six points while Guatemala are stuck on a single point entering their final match of the group stage on Monday against Grenada. Sħãlïq™
MLS-ers the stars as Reggae Boyz get past Honduras in Group B http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/johnson.jpg HARRISON, N.J. — The mood at Red Bull Arena on Monday night told you it was going to be a vibrant match between Honduras and Jamaica, and the players seemed to soak up the energy as the Reggae Boyz held on for a 1-0 win in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. San Jose Earthquakes striker Ryan Johnson was the hero on the night—and almost the goat—as he scored the winner, but also failed to convert a second-half penalty that would’ve iced the match. Using a combination of speed, power, and clever passing, Jamaica delivered on the promise of their two earlier wins. They finish perfect in group play and qualify for the Gold Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2005. As winners of Group B, the Jamaicans will face the runners-up in Group C, who will be determined in the final group matches on Tuesday. http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/richards_0.jpg In the 3rd minute, New York Red Bulls winger Dane Richards set the tone for the Jamaicans. A ball over the top released him into the Honduran area, but he was unable to round goalkeeper Noel Valladares.Source: http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/13/gold-cup-richards-johnson-lead-way-jamaicas-1-0-win

Sħãlïq™
US player ratings from win over GuadeloupeAmericans generally improved but finishing still needs fine-tuning http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/altidore-3.jpg Though a few will be sent to finishing school, the grades are mostly improved after the United States posted an advancement victory over game Guadeloupe that was closer than it needed to be. Despite being served up a buffet of chances on the evening, the Nats ended up having to get by on Jozy Altidore's delicious first half leg roast. While the US did fail to get their money's worth in attack, the tweaked team generally ruled the proceedings through patient play much more befitting of a favorite in a CONCACAF mismatch. Here are the ratings for the US' 1-0 win: Jermaine Jones (7) — There were a couple of early moments where the midfielder's energy got the better of him. From about the half-hour mark on, he was among the best few players on the field. The active midfielder should have had an assist from one of several quality entry passes in particular. Clint Dempsey (4.5) — Top shelf Deuce would have bagged at least a hat trick, and I can't even imagine what the idea was on the late sitter miss. On the plus side, Dempsey fired off a pair of scary free kicks, did some nice possession work and made sharp runs. Landon Donovan (5) — While Dempsey missed three prime chances, Donovan became the new Wondo by skying over from the doorstep when it seemed a trick. As has become typical, his build work was competent and his restarts mediocre as a bunch. Jozy Altidore (7) — It was beyond great to see Altidore abandon any hesitation in unleashing that cold-blooded winner. In addition, his incisive runs were expertly timed, repeatedly drawing the team into attack mode.Full Story: http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/15/gold-cup-us-player-ratings-win-over-guadeloupe
Sħãlïq™
Injury Ends Altidore's Gold CupStriker out 4-6 wks. with hamstring strain http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/06/altidore-injury.jpg HOUSTON — Jozy Altidore’s Gold Cup is over. The US Soccer Federation revealed Wednesday afternoon that Altidore will miss four to six weeks with a left hamstring strain, ending what was a promising tournament run for the Americans’ top striker. Altidore went down with the injury early in the team’s quarterfinal match against Jamaica on Sunday and was replaced in the 12th minute by Juan Agudelo. Per Gold Cup regulations, the US will not be able to replace the striker on their 23-man roster. Altidore scored two of the team's four goals during the group stage, including a blast from distance that helped the US top Guadeloupe 1-0 and lift them into the quarterfinals.http://www.mlssoccer.com/goldcup/news/article/2011/06/22/gold-cup-injured-altidore-done-remainder-tourney Edited June 22, 2011 by Shalïq
