RANDY FOYE MATCHES QUENTIN RICHARDSON’S RECORD FOR 3-POINTERS MADE

http://www.nba.com/clippers/photos/post-670-120402.jpg

Three-pointer number eight on the night for Randy Foye must have come as somewhat of a surprise. The Clippers guard was having a career-shooting night from deep and with the Mavericks scrambling to make a comeback, Foye spotted up on the left wing, one of his favorite areas on the perimeter, only to see Dirk Nowitzki run the opposite direction to cover Blake Griffin in the paint. Nowitzki seemed to think teammate Delonte West would rotate over to Foye, but when West stayed at the top of the key, Foye obliged the open look, knocking down his eighth 3-pointer in 14 tries to match a Clipper franchise record. He went on to finish 8-for-15 from distance, missing his final attempt in L.A.’s emphatic 94-75 win, scoring a season-high 28 points.

“Whatever the defense gave me I took,” Foye said. “I was just knocking down shots.”

Knocking down shots might be an understatement. Only once before has legendary Clippers broadcaster Ralph Lawler called “Biiingo” eight times for a single player in a game, when small forward Quentin Richardson made 8 of his 11 3-pointers at Boston on Feb. 4, 2004. For the Clippers, it was exactly what they needed coming into Dallas with the chance to take the season series and gain a game of separation in the Western Conference standings.

“I know [Foye] had it on his mind the last time we came and played here, a lot of us did,” said Griffin referencing the Clippers four-point loss to Dallas in February. “For him to come out and perform that way is special.” According to Foye, Griffin’s presence on the floor had a lot to do with his open looks. “I was just being aggressive,” Foye said. “That was my main thing was to just come out and be aggressive. They were cracking down on Blake when he was driving and it opened up lanes, and I was just feeling it.”

Foye’s first 3-pointer came at the 8:15 mark of the first quarter off a feed from Griffin, giving the Clippers a 7-4 lead. He proceeded to make one more before halftime, but erupted in the third quarter, making four 3-pointers as well as a layup. In the fourth, with Dallas desperate to turn things around, Foye provided somewhat of a dagger. He made two shots from behind the arc in 58 seconds, including his eighth with not a Maverick near him, leading to a timeout from a disgruntled Rick Carlisle.

Griffin's new tag as a 'villain' is nothing but crazy talk

Blake Griffin has never wanted for the opinions of outsiders.

Folks have been offering not-so-flattering assessments of him and his basketball skills as far back as his high school days at Oklahoma Christian School. He remembers playing in some small towns around the state and hearing lots of talk. (...)

At the suggestion that Griffin had turned to the dark side, Clippers point guard Chris Paul nearly choked on his post-practice energy bar.

“What's not to like about him?” he said. “He's fun. He's funny. He laughs, jokes, smiles. He's a great guy off the court.”

“Shoot, everybody loves him,” Paul said, getting fired up as he talked. “Shoot, don't nobody love him more than my son.

“I don't know nobody that don't like Blake.” He paused. “Except for the guys he dunks on.”

Keith Closs Wore His Own Jersey to Clippers – Grizzlies Game 4

Former Clipper Keith Closs was in attendance at last night’s Los Angeles – Memphis game wearing his own jersey from his days with the team. While this may seem random, it’s the logical conclusion to a long and strange journey for the former LA big man.

The 7’3″ Closs spent part of three seasons with the Clippers, averaging 3.9 points and 1.3 blocks in 130 career games. I remember Closs’ stint in the NBA and always figured he was one of the many first round busts in the organization’s history. He actually started his professional career in the ABA before joining the Clippers. He still holds the NCAA record for career blocks per game.

What are the odds that Keith Closs would be the victim of one of the first viral video brawls? This video is like a time capsule. Death Row Celebrity Beatdowns Volume 1. Only Suge Knight could have pulled something like that off. If only because when they ran out of celebrity beatdowns he would have paid people to go out and fight celebrities.

Chauncey Billups granted bird rights

Lin Granted Early-Bird Rights

By HOWARD BECK

An arbitrator has granted Jeremy Lin his so-called early-Bird rights, which will give the Knicks much greater latitude in free agency on July 1, according to a person who was informed of the ruling. The arbitrator's ruling means Jeremy Lin will be able to re-sign with the Knicks without respect to the salary cap, for a starting salary around $5 million.

The arbitrator, Kenneth Dam, issued his ruling Friday, siding with the National Basketball Players Association, which challenged the N.B.A.’s interpretation of the rules under the collective bargaining agreement. Dam handed the union a complete victory in the ruling. The ruling means that both Lin and Steve Novak of the Knicks will be able to re-sign with the team without respect to the salary cap, for a starting salary around $5 million each. Just as critically, it means that the Knicks will not need to use their midlevel exception to sign either player, which will allow them to use that slot for another free agent.

The ruling — which applies to any player who was claimed off waivers — also affects Chauncey Billups of the Los Angeles Clippers and J. J. Hickson of the Portland Trail Blazers. Billups and Hickson will now have full Bird rights, allowing them to re-sign with their teams for any amount up to the maximum salary.

Clippers make an offer to Jamal Crawford

The Clippers offered a contract to Jamal Crawford on Tuesday, but no deal is imminent as he weighs potential interest from the Wolves, Sixers, Suns, and Grizzlies.

There was word that Crawford was going to be offered mid-level money over three years, but the terms are undisclosed at this time. The inefficient volume shooter is a liability on defense and needs to be in a second-unit gunning role, and if he signs with the Clippers he'll need to cool it on the bad shots or face the wrath of CP3.
