Art Posted January 24, 2012 Report Share Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) Smith is an athletic and versatile forward. He is a big-time rebounder and shot-blocker and can defend multiple positions. He can handle and pass for a big man while also being able to step away from the basket and knock down the perimeter shot. However, there is a problem with their team chemistry. Smith desperately needs a veteran coach like Doc Rivers to get him to play hard, help him with shot selection and drive him to be the best player he can be. The Hawks would benefit with the addition of a player of Pierce's veteran stature. Art Posted January 24, 2012 Author Report Share Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) I can see Pierce not playing like he gives a @hit if he goes to a team with no chance. Breaking up the big three and Orlando's potential trade of Dwight only ranks the Hawks up the ladder in the east.  Peirce could give them a year of veteran leadership that is a lot more valuable than losing Smith via free agency; In the past four seasons the Hawks winning percentage in the south east has been 0.41425 in the division with the Heat and Orlando, last year they were .500, ranked 3rd in the SE. For Memphis, it is high risk trading a young 20PPG scorer for a star on the decline, but Pierce would fit in really well and could make Memphis the favorites in the West (which they aren't far from now). As the article mentioned, he is a better perimeter shooter than Gay, and he is a better iso scorer, better passer, and still a good defender for his position. He is also clutch as hell and could give the team some veteran leadership. For Boston, they get younger, and the Rondo/Gay combo could make them a scary transition team. Like seriously Josh Smith, Rudy Gay, Danny Granger or Paul Millsap w/Kanter? All of these guys for the most part are still a young age and still have good years left in them. Granger has the attitude and demeanor of a superstar, but the game of a 3rd option. HibbertWestPierceGeorgeCollison with Jones, Hill, Hansbrough and Foster off of the bench is pretty nice. Of course it likely still wouldn't get them past the Bulls or Heat, but it would make them a very tough team. You aren't winning anything with the current roster anyways; might be worth the risk.  I'd be hesitant on any of the other deals. The Grizzlies one is interesting for the reasons Nitro pointed out. Maybe you could argue for the Hawks deal with the same logic behind the Pacer one, but they would be creating a hole at PF by moving Smith and would have to play even smaller than they already do, especially with Horford out for most of the season. Probably wouldn't do that one. All in all, the only one I'd like pully the trigger on would be the Pacer one (from a Pacer standpoint).
