Orlando Has Lost Its Magic

On June 24, 2004, a mere seven-and-a-half years ago, NBA Commissioner David Stern said the famous line, “With the first overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft, the Orlando Magic select Dwight Howard.” That quote is now a distant memory to Magic fans, who currently seem to be witnessing the conclusion of the Dwight Howard era in Orlando. Recently, Howard added the L.A. Clippers to his personal trade block. The Clippers are just another name to be placed on Howard’s laundry list of potential suitors that already include the Lakers and Nets.

 

Orlando, being a small market team, does not have the appeal of a big market the way Los Angeles and Boston could provide. The harsh reality, though, is that the Magic have had their fair share of opportunities to keep their star happy and in Orlando.

 

Over the last seven seasons with Howard, the Magic have attempted to incorporate multiple superstars to play with Howard. In 2007, they went out and brought in small forward Rashard Lewis to be the wingman. At the point, Orlando went with the prospect of St. Joe’s standout Jameer Nelson. Nelson was acquired in the same draft as Howard by Denver, and Orlando quickly traded for him.
