Dash Posted February 8, 2012 Report Share Posted February 8, 2012 So my brother became a huge hockey fan this year and I'm thinking about giving the sport a shot as well. Thing is that I know absolutely nothing about the NHL and I don't know what team I should follow. My brother went out of the region and is a Penguins fan (kinda depressed about the Crosby injury) FYI. I could follow the only team in Texas in the Stars but again I know nothing about them, and I'm open to following any team in the league. Not that I am a bandwagoner but this is a new sport to me and if there isn't anything to be the least bit excited about this season then its going to be difficult for me to stay interested for long. If you want a team to get excited about, try a team like to Oilers. They have probably the best young team in the league. Or if you want to follow a contender, maybe Detroit or New York Rangers? Oh and i'm just wondering, living in Texas, is there much TV coverage of the Stars? Like do you have to order NHL network to watch it or do they show games on any local networks or anything? Plus they have two good young American goalies! Although Jack Campbell (first round pick a few years back) hasn't really progressed like he was expected to. Built Ford Tough Posted February 9, 2012 Report Share Posted February 9, 2012 Yeah the Stars have a pretty nice team. Jamie Benn is one of the best young power forwards in the game. He is going to be a star. Loui Eriksson is another excellent young player. The two of them together are going to be 2/3rds of a great 1st line for years to come. Alex Gologoski is a pretty nice young defenseman as well. They also have some solid prospects coming through the system. Like Phigtins mentioned, Jack Campbell but they also have Scott Glennie (10th overall pick in 09), Jamie Oleksiak (14th overall pick in 2011) and Alex Chiasson (38th overall in 2009 but has been a point per game player for the last two years at Boston University). They don't just have young players. Mike Ribeiro is usually around a 70 point center, Brendan Morrow is a very good 2 way player (although he is having a poor year this season as age may be catching up to him), Michael Ryder just won a cup with the Bruins last year and has always been a solid player, Stephane Robidas is one of the more underrated defenseman and an absolute warrior and Kari Lehtonen is a nice goalie. I've never really been one to say "cheer for this team" because it is always more of watching different teams and seeing what team feels right, which.despite me being from British Columbia, was how I became a Leaf, Raptors and Blue Jay fan instead of teams like the Grizzlies, Canucks and Marriners who are in much closer proximity to me. The Grizzlies and Canucks are/were my 2nd favourite teams, but I've always been a fan of the Raptors and Leafs over them. Just go with your gut. You should go check out a game even if it is just the Texas Stars. The best way to fall in love with hockey is seeing it live and with the AHL, you get to see great hockey for cheap and also aren't in the nose bleeds. Well I've never been in this position before so I had no clue what to do lol. I'm liking the sound of the Stars (talent, young, in-state) but I'm going to go ahead and take your advice and try to watch as many games as I can before I pick. Appreciate the replies. You should go check out a game even if it is just the Texas Stars. The best way to fall in love with hockey is seeing it live and with the AHL, you get to see great hockey for cheap and also aren't in the nose bleeds. Houston has an AHL team that apparently has a strong fanbase and I know the city has had some interest in bringing in an NHL team for a couple years now (the Coyotes were rumored to be a possibility last year) but so far no luck. Anyways if I can find some free time for the next home game then I might just go ahead and attend an Aeros game just to get a feel for the sport. Thanks for the heads up, I didn't consider that. You root for the Bruins. They're bigger, badder, tougher, and better than every team in the NHL. They'll beat you up, and beat you down. Not to mention they are the defending championed.
