Triano and Nash Re-Joining Canada Basketball?

It was only a matter of time before Jay Triano would assume a role that suited him perfectly, a matter of circumstance permitting the native of Niagara Falls to rejoin Canada Basketball.

 

The time is not now, but it will soon arrive, likely once this summer’s Olympics are put to bed, for Triano to lead what many believe is the golden age of Canadian hoops, when so much homegrown talent is either playing in the NBA or is knocking on its doors.

 

The buzz among basketball’s circles, at least in Canada, is that Triano will succeed Leo Rautins as national team head coach.

 

It should be clearly pointed out that nothing is official, but unofficially all signs are pointing to Triano leading a new wave of talent that features Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph with a pool of talent so deep that it would be foolish to start naming all the names playing in U.S. prep schools or at big-time NCAA programs.

 

No one other than Steve Nash has been the face of basketball in Canada more than Triano, who did all he could during his ill-fated run as Raptors head coach after Sam Mitchell was shown the door.

 

 

It’s also expected that Nash will soon return to his basketball roots in Canada, a position some believe will be as general manager.

 

Basketball officials have to be careful because Triano is technically under contract for the U.S., which will be favoured to capture gold in London.

 

Nash is under no obligations and an announcement on Captain Canada’s role with Canada Basketball may come as early as next month.

 

Canada hasn’t played in any significant event since the 2000 Olympics, a showcase that featured Nash at the point position and Triano as head coach.

Hopefully both of these things come true.

 

Triano is by far the best coach out there for the Canadian national team and is a much, much better choice than Leo Rautins, no offense to Leo. The team experienced its most success under the guidance of Triano and he has a great relationship with a lot of the up and coming Canadian talent such as Cory Joseph, Tristan Thompson, Myck Kabono, Kris Joseph, Kevin Pangos and Robert Sacre. He is easily the logical choice and, quite frankly, never should've been fired in the 1st place.

 

As for Nash, I'm a bit skeptical on that part, but then again, its not like being the GM would be all that difficult. It wouldn't be for a few years anyways, since I don't see him doing it while he is still playing. I also think having him involved would be a great way of ensuring that all of the top players play every summer, not like what happened this past summer when guys like Thompson turned down the offer to play.

 

I mean, who is going to turn down an offer to play for Canada if it is extended by Steve Nash?

Would be a nice step in the development of Canadian basketball.

I think it can only be a positive having Nash as a general manager. Unlike the USA, the talent pool to pick from is smaller and the choices right now are pretty simple. Plus his name alone is great for our country to get a bigger buzz going with basketball.

 

An overhaul is needed anyways and it comes at a perfect time to mold a team that would be competitive in in six years.

Triano never should have been replaced in the first place, especially not by a God damn colour commentator. The future is definitely exciting for Canada basketball though, it is going to be real fun watching these kids go through college and hopefully become real good players, and one day put this jersey on.

 

Nash as a figurehead at the very least would be a major step in the right direction.

There is a press conference at the Air Canada Centre scheduled for 12PM EST tomorrow for a "big announcement" regarding Canada Basketball.

 

Speculation is that it will be to confirm what has been speculated for months. Nash as GM, Triano as head coach, although it is not for sure. I can't really think about what else it would be, though.

Might still be him. The mens team doesn't really have anything this summer since they didn't qualify for the last chance Olympic tournament this summer. As far as I know, it is basically a summer off for the mens team.

 

The majority of the speculation I've read is that he will have an executive role and not coach. I'd rather him coach since there really isn't any better option if we are talking strictly Canadian coaches.

Canada Basketball is holding press conference is scheduled for 10 AM PST tomorrow to announce that Triano will be named the head coach.

 

Perfect timing considering Nash is having an orientation camp this weekend for the senior men's team. I don't know all of the players involved, but I do know that 20-25 players will be there and that includes some of the upcoming young talent like Wiggins, Ennis and Kabongo as well as the obvious guys (CoJo, Thompson, etc...).
