Butler Not Ruling Out Playing

Recommended Posts

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Los Angeles Clippers forward Caron Butler is likely out for the rest of the playoffs after breaking his left hand in Game 1 against Memphis.

The team said Monday that Butler is expected to be sidelined four to six weeks after getting hurt late in the third quarter of the Clippers' 99-98 win Sunday night. He broke the fifth metacarpal in his left hand and an X-ray taken at the arena during the game confirmed the injury. Butler scored 12 points in the game.

With Butler and Chauncey Billups sidelined, it leaves the Clippers with two of their most influential leaders in street clothes.

Del Negro said he’s still not sure if Nick Young, who scored a team-high 19 points on Sunday, or Bobby Simmons will start in Butler’s absence.

“It’s going to be by committee,” Del Negro said. “Guys are going to have to step up really now.

“You can’t [replace Butler]. At this stage there’s no time to work through it a little bit. The next guy in line has got to be ready. It hurts us depending on who we’re going to start and how it’s going to work out.”

I actually think that Nick Young shocked Memphis a bit. The Grizzlies went in knowing how Butler was going to play with these guys. Young...there was no gameplan for.

It reminds me of teams that lose their star players, and end up winning games without them for a small amount of time. Teams just have to go back from scratch and figure out how they are going to play.

Can't see the Clips winning this series, but who knows.

(...) Can't see the Clips winning this series, but who knows.

:o I'm stunned. I'll leave this quote speak for me:

"Speaking of history, the Clippers had some on their side this season. Fifteen times they won games after trailing by 10 or more points, per Elias Sports. But down 27 in the Grind House … when the Grizzlies had it working in ever way imaginable, including my main man Zach Randolph doing push ups … and with Chris Paul struggling with that groin injury … Caron Butler in a suit after breaking his hand … and Blake Griffin just struggling in his playoff debut … there was no way this was happening.

Oh, but it did."

Butler Not Ruling Out Playing in First Round Despite Broken Hand

When Caron Butler went down with a broken left hand in Game 1 of the Clippers/Grizzlies first round Playoff series, everyone assumed that was it for him. Everyone but Caron Butler, that is. From the LA Times: “Perhaps it’s wishful thinking on the part of Clippers small forward Caron Butler, but he said, ‘If there’s a will, there’s a way,’ regarding the possibility of his playing before the first-round series with Memphis is over. Butler will see a hand specialist Thursday in Los Angeles after the Clippers return home to determine how bad his fractured left hand is. The diagnosis said Butler would be out four to six weeks with the injury, meaning the earliest he could return would be the end of May. Butler, who was replaced in the starting lineup for Game 2 Wednesday night by Bobby Simmons, was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s night’s game when his hand got caught in Rudy Gay’s jersey. ‘I haven’t done anything with a basketball yet, but I do know that I injured it early in the third quarter and I still was able to play and be effective,’ Butler said. ‘I just knew something was wrong and I knew something wasn’t feeling right. I’ll go see the specialist tomorrow and see what they come up with.’”
