Vet FW Grant Hill will likely miss opening night, and it could be weeks until he returns. An MRI on Hill's right knee showed a bone bruise, coach Del Negro said Tuesday. After the Clippers' 88-71 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Monday, Hill said his injury will keep him out "at least a couple of weeks."

Hill was expected to compete with Matt Barnes and Willie Green for the starting shooting guard spot until Chauncey Billups returns. Hill has appeared in two preseason games, both against the Miami Heat in China. Neither Hill nor Lamar Odom has played in a preseason game since coming back from the China trip.

Hill, Odom, and Trey Thompkins didn't practice Tuesday. All three players are dealing with what the team has called "bone bruises" in their knees. The Clippers and Del Negro have been vague with details on the injuries. Tuesday, Del Negro said he expects Odom to return before Hill.

GRANT HILL UPDATE

Clippers head coach Vinny Del Negro talked after practice about Hill, who is out with a bone bruise in his right knee.

“He just needs some more time,” Del Negro said. “Our medical staff will keep giving me the updates on a daily basis and he’s doing his rehab. Luckily, we have Matt [barnes] who can step in and give us some more size at the 3.”

Barnes was suspended for the Clippers opener against the Memphis Grizzlies for pleading nolo contendre, in California state court, to resisting, delaying or obstructing an officer in the discharge of his duties, but is expected to play Friday against the Lakers.

While there is still no timetable for Hill’s return, Del Negro said the 40-year-old, seven-time All-Star will not have a second MRI on his ailing knee. “There’s no reason to. He’s feeling a lot better. The doctor feels good about where he’s at. We’re not going to know anything until he starts conditioning on the court with the pounding. But he says everything’s looking good.”
