What would you do about Hack-A-Shaq?

Real Deal

Real Deal - you wouldn't care about this AT ALL if it wasn't affecting your team negatively. Dwight needs to learn how to shoot a free throw, plain and simple.

But were you this angered by it between the Shaq-Dwight years? No. And was it getting this kind of media attention? No. And how many games out of the entire NBA schedule is this even a factor? Like 1%.

Ugh...didn't feel like searching, but okay...

http://lakernation.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33585-source-lakers-to-offer-bynum-for-bosh/page__st__640#entry600894

Well, you foul him when he's in position to score, with the ball...but that's not Hack-A-Howard. THAT is fouling him without the ball, at the end of the game, to put him at the line.

I'd rather us play defense, really. It ruins the end of a game. The other night, Indiana sent Howard to the line for 24 free throws, and it SUCKED watching it...but the end of the game, when they were down and started to use the Hack-A-Howard, it was ignorant...and I think it sucked the air out of them, because as they were playing through this strategy and thinking it was going to do something for them, Orlando was getting their rest after the Pacers basically decided to run them in the fourth (and grab all momentum)...and then, they ended up losing by double-digits.

We were a horrible FT shooting team back in the day, and we still were a dynasty. It never worked with Shaq. I'd rather us rely on how we play a game for 48 minutes, and how we choose to defend certain players throughout that time, rather than going the cheap route and winning one game of what could eventually be a series of games where, unfortunately, we may not be able to depend on it every night.

Against it, even though I hate Shaq and now I laugh when he misses free throws. Easy out for bad defensive teams, and I've always been surprised that Popovich continues to go to it. Someone like John Kuester, who probably tells his Pistons that all they need to do is shoot the ball to win...yeah, I see why he would have to rely on it...but regardless, it just brings the game down for me.

Honestly guys, it's pretty disrespectful to basically say I'm lying about something, after I repeat it in this topic twice...but, it's whatever.

You ain't getting my point...first off, 2 posts in 3-4 years means that it wasn't something that was really on the forefront of your mind. Secondly, the fact that it's the Lakers (and they are way underperforming) has made it a major point for you, the media and everyone else. It has become a huge topic of discussion, which considering that Hack-a whoever effects less than 1% of all games played in an entire season, is kinda crazy.

Of course not.

http://www.discusshoops.com/forums/topic/29303-what-puts-the-denver-nuggets-over-the-top

When I created that topic, it wasn't something I was thinking about for 2-3 months. I knew Denver was not going to be "over the top" and wouldn't find a way to be.

I posted this topic because it was being discussed elsewhere and to help us with discussion...and it was a topic elsewhere because of David Stern's comments on the matter.

None of my business why Stern decided to discuss it...probably because it was LA and not Orlando...but I read it correctly, that I only cared about the subject because it applied to my Lakers losing, and that's simply not true AND not the reason why we are losing games, anyway (while we are on a win streak, nonetheless).

You misinterpreted my comments. What I was saying is this is only such an issue, basically in every form of media outlet (including forums) because A) It's the Lakers, and B) They are losing with Dwight's FT shooting as part of the problem. If he was making his FT's in those situations, no one would say a peep about the strategy, and people would just mark it off as stupid.

Which brings me back...it effects so few games, and only 2-3 teams and maybe 10 players have to even be worried about it. It's a legal strategy that often WORKS, so why should teams stop doing it? It's playing the percentages, the same way defenses force some teams to shoot 3 pointers, why other defenses play zone, etc... It wouldn't even be thought up by opposing teams if Dwight would just hit his FT's.

LOL. I quoted you asking ME if I was this angered by it during the non-Shaq, non-Dwight era, and then you went on to answer me, as if I really had some sort of a bias.

But were you this angered by it between the Shaq-Dwight years? No.

Then I showed you where I stated it was ignorant.

You then tell me it doesn't matter, and 2-3 posts are irrelevant.

I created the topic primarily for discussion + the fact that Stern made a comment on it, not that I'm sitting over here fuming about it. It's not hard to understand.

Why do people compare those to the Hack-A-Shaq? There's a huge difference. Those are defensive strategies that still require defense. Hacking a player, intentionally, isn't playing defense at all.

Kobe giving Rondo room to shoot a three-pointer doesn't require that Rondo shoots the three. It doesn't prevent Rondo from driving, anyway. It doesn't prevent Kobe from getting hit with a screen. Kobe is STILL on the court, playing defense.

Hacking a player intentionally, when he doesn't have the ball, is cheap. Puts you on the block, waiting for the miss, and it's 100% up to the player at the FT line with you taking zero responsibility for his makes or misses.

Whatever you guys say, though. It sure works against us well, though, to the tune of three consecutive rings and a dynasty.

Once again, if this wasn't the Lakers, and they weren't losing, this wouldn't peek anybody's radar. The fact that you are a Laker fan makes this even more so since you watch all their games. This crap has been going on for years with Dwight, yet it has never been a major topic of conversation. If this was last season, with Howard on Orlando, I doubt this topic would have ever been created, and you probably would have never even noticed what was going on.

It's a legal strategy...it's an off-ball foul, and if you remove the hack-a-whoever thing, it opens up a whole new can of worms. To remove a legal rule that would essentially cater to teams with poor FT shooters, even in the sub-text of retaining the integrity of the game, is ridiculous. For the other 27 or so teams that have no issues with major rotation players shooting 50% from the FT line, it would only hurt their teams and fanbases.

And that last part of your post is so smug and ridiculous. If the player is hitting 50% of his FT's on those hacks, it does a few things...kills the more talented teams offensive momentum and, statistically, makes them less efficient scoring the ball, especially if they are on a roll. It also gives the team of the player being hacked incentive to take him out of the game. And for a team like LA, that means taking away their defensive anchor, best rebounder, best paint finisher, and means putting in a scrub like Antawn Jamison to replace him.

If Howard or Shaq hit their FT's at a 70% or higher clip, those Laker teams would be even better. The 3-peat Lakers won DESPITE Shaq's FT shooting. It did not add to their championship runs in any way, shape or form.

Nowhere in my post, in any post, did I say that it made us better. I said, sarcastically, that it worked SOOOOO well that it stopped us from winning our three championships.

Yeah, if we shot our free throws better, we'd be better. If last year's championship Miami Heat team wasn't bottom five in defending the three-point line, they would have been better.

It was a simple question. People answer, and move on.

The league shouldn't do a thing about it. It's clear that these guys probably have not practiced their free throws in the gym as much as they should have. They know that they're going to be sent to the free throw line countless times over the course of the season, so why not take the time to polish their technique?
