Final got around to seeing it today. I've read the book, but it's been a long time so I'm not exactly sure how accurate the film was but I generally enjoyed it. The beginning where everyone was in Bilbo's house was quite lengthy, but it definitely picked up after that. Excited to see The Desolation of Smaug in 2013.

I kid you not, I knew nothing about the book coming in....during the first hour, I was convinced I was going to sit through a 3 hour movie of people talking, and that all the hardcore LOTR fans just love people talking and stuff. Thankfully it picked up and got interesting. I watched it in 3D and 48 frames, and it looked terrible at first, but you get used to it.

Felt the same here. First hour was dreadful and my expectations for the rest of the movie were low especially considering that its a 300 page book + author notes divided into 3 movies. It did pick up though like you said and I'm glad I watched it.

So for someone who had never watched a LOTR movie nor doesnt have any interest to watch them, would watching this be a dumb idea?

Yes, mainly because you'd probably be annoyed by the fact that it's three hours long.
