The Rockets have been in trade talks with several teams about moving veteran guard Brent Barry, according to several individuals with knowledge of the talks.

The most serious discussions have been with the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. A trade to the Clippers could extend Barry's career, with the Clippers potentially offering a chance to play near Barry's Los Angeles area home.

Though nothing appears imminent, there is “a good shot” that Barry could be traded to create roster space before the start of training camp Oct. 28.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey declined to comment and Barry could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Barry has one more season, worth $2.062 million, left on the two-year contract he signed with the Rockets July 10, 2008.

The Rockets signed Barry, 37, to be a playoff-tested veteran for a contending team, but with the injury to Yao Ming and with Tracy McGrady still working his way back from microfracture surgery, they have signed rookies Jermaine Taylor and Chase Budinger at Barry's positions.

With forward/center Pops Mensah-Bonsu expected to sign this week, the Rockets would have 17 players under contract, though Mensah-Bonsu and James White would nave non-guaranteed contracts.

If the Rockets wish to go younger but cannot complete a trade, they could also seek a buyout agreement with Barry, making him a free agent. Barry, a 14-year NBA veteran, averaged 3.7 points in 56 games with the Rockets last season, making 40.7 percent of his shots.

The buyout seems most likely. Shame he won't be able to carry on the family tradition and retire in Houston, but he is no where near the player we thought we were getting. I could see him making one last stint with a championship team.
