  5. http://www.discusshoops.com/images/jerseys/realdeal.jpg http://www.discusshoops.com/forums/user/1-real-deal/ The one name that is synonymous with OTR/DH...the creator himself. Real Deal, Brandon, B...he is the Michael Jordan of sports website owners. And just like MJ, now he's going to take a few minutes and rip into everyone who ever doubted him. Kidding. Sort of. But regardless of what you call him, there's no denying that this man has done more for the people here than you can imagine. Countless hours spent coding, designing skins, creating rosters, writing articles, designing banners, creating and replying to thousands of posts. No, not just those. The fact that he has provided us with the best place to discuss basketball on the web is one thing, but to create a place where he's actually helped people with life issues as well? Simply incredible. Anyone remember his "Love Advice" thread way back in the day? Or how about spending hours on AIM being real and honest with complete strangers who turned to him for advice? Remember him creating a charity with our "Shoot for the Stars" t-shirts? Brandon Neal's greatest accomplishment isn't the site itself, but how he has made a real impact in the lives of those who have come to call this home. There have been many highs and lows over these past 7 years, but one thing remains true. And that is "Real Deal" Brandon Neal does not give up. He didn't give up when he lost his vision. He didn't give up when we were wiped out completely after the hack. He didn't give up when bigger, more active sites tried to buy us out. Relentless. He does not quit. Today we honor this man. Today is your day, Brandon. Take a bow, you've earned it brother. Congratulations, B. You are immortalized in the OTR Hall of Fame!

  6. Chris, Thank you for the letter. Sorry I couldn't reply to this last night; I was showing Andre how to keep his distance from 3-point shooters if we're up by 4 points at the end of the game, and plus, the site's CAPTCHA was too confusing to read (some of those letters look like lines and scribbles), and by the time I decided to register, everyone on the plane was sleeping. We are doing our best. We are taking care of Tony Battie's knees as much as we can. I think we'll still get about 6-10 minutes out of him for the rest of the season, but I can only pray. Allen Iverson keeps phoning me from some weird telephone number, leaving messages about how he should be starting over Jrue, not sure what that's about. Oh, and I'm happy to tell you that I had a dream about Michael the other night...we won eight championships together, he decided not to retire in 1993 because I was still there, then we ditched Chicago and suited up for the Sixers as teammates in 1998, dominated the league and got married one year later. Marcus Jordan looks just like his daddy, but has my forehead! Do you know we're the 7th seed in the East? Holy [expletive], I didn't know that, either. Time to get ready for the Bobcats tonight. I hope Michael is in Charlotte, waiting to greet me! Sincerely, Doug

  8. Yeah, we get it, the activity sucks here right now. You've told us that in three different posts that I can remember. We should all move to an all-sports site (bet I can guess which one you prefer), and OTR is dying. It's devastating, and it happens every single off-season. Fortunately, for some crazy ass reason, we are still here after five years, even through this destruction. Basketball discussion goes into the team forums. We don't clutter one forum for every team. It's been that way for years. As much as I hated them at one point, I'm modeling the site off of JBB, which was the best basketball site you could find. If I wanted 150-200 active posters every single day, with 2-3 pages of active off-topic posts and discussion of every single sport, I could easily turn OTRBasketball back into "OTRForums" and finish by creating expanded sports directories. I don't want that. What I run on is collecting the best basketball minds I can, and giving them a place to post. If that means I have 100 or less of those members, good...because it also means I have a minimal amount of non-intelligent, trouble-making, immature posters...and that will always be more valuable than anything else.

  17. Its been sweet here man. I know I wasn't here during the "prime" of OTR but the discussion here has always been really solid. It really sucks that some guys on here are such bitches, honestly had no idea they PMed you and Facebooked you asking guys to stop trolling them and shit, that is disgusting, honestly. From both sides, so wack. I'd just shut her down after the finals, as bad as it sounds. There's really no incentive for people to join/post if there is an expiry date on the board. But seriously its been awesome, RD is without a doubt the best site owner around that I know of, and some of the best basketball discussion happens on this board that I've seen (could be wrong, don't know of many other forums, kinda just spend all my internet time here... call me sheltered). Ya'll gotta let me know where dudes here post about ball cuz this is where some of the most legit sport discussion happens. I really hope I can see some of you around (Flash, RD, ECN, Phightphins, etc... all the good posters around here). But seriously, thanks again to RD he doesn't get enough credit for all the work he puts into this board. He does so much and asks for so little in return. I'm not one to slob a guy off on the internet, but seriously, thanks for the work you've put in over the years.

  26. Ok, I have a little time on the computer today, so basically I spent 53 days at a rehab in Deerfield Beach, Florida. At the facility there were about 60 guys and 25-30 girls, and we were split up into two apartment buildings (they looked like beach hotels, and rehab patients were the only residents on the premises). The guys weren't allowed to talk to the girls, and we'd get yelled at if we even stared at them for any extended amount of time. Of course a few guys and girls got kicked out because of violating these rules. We were allowed to walk all around the premises in our free time, each building had its own pool, and we had a public cafe right next to the girls building where we could buy food, cigarettes or whatever. 3x a week they took us to the gym (I gained 20lbs and got my bench up to 180 10x while I was there), and 1x a week they took us to the beach. During the day we had 4 total hours of group therapy, and an hour-long A.A/N.A meeting. The rest of the time we were allowed to do whatever. Each person shared an apartment with 1-3 other people, and each apartment had a TV (w/cable), oven, microwave, bathroom w/shower, and 2 bedrooms. We weren't allowed to leave property except for the gym and beach, got to use the phone only like once every 2 weeks to call 1 family member, and weren't allowed to leave our rooms past 11pm. Anyway, I met a lot of crazy [expletive]ing people while there...like people who have been to prison for 10x years and killed people, people who have been in gangs and kidnapped other gang member's mom's for ransom, people who have been stabbed by their father for being gay, tried shooting themselves in the head and when their friends tried to wrestle the gun away they accidentally shot their friend's toe off, etc... While I was there I learned how to give a jailhouse haircut with a razor and comb, had a loaded gun pointed at me by some inbred redneck cuz I was staring and sticking my tongue out at his daughter while on my way to the gym one day, realized that half the state of NJ is in Florida rehabs (like over 1/3 of this place was from NJ), and learned that people from Boston suck and we should have sent cruise missiles there instead of Libya. Overall, I learned a lot and met a lot of cool (albeit crazy) people. Now I am in a halfway house in Delray Beach, which is basically just an apartment where I have a curfew. I am currently looking for a job, and still going to AA/NA meetings. My dad's coming down for business on Sunday, so he'll bring my computer down and then I'll really start being able to post. I don't plan on being down here past May, but we'll see.

  28. It's cause of [expletive]ing idiots like this guy and Prodigy and some others that only come to OTR to bash on Swish and fail at backseat modding. How are we going to encourage new members to keep posting if we keep scaring them away and attempt to get them banned all the time? I was for the neg rep, until I saw some of the posts in this thread. It's really getting pathetic. Do you come to OTR to discuss basketball or pick on people to get a little green mark saying plus one next to your name to make up for your sad life outside of the internet? Honestly, the whole rep system is retarded now. A lengthy, well thought article by Erick or another writer will get one or two reps if lucky, but a "go play with your baseball cards" post will get 5+.

  32. You're probably shocked...but this is the new name of the site. OTRBasketball isn't exactly going away, but the name is. After talking with a few people, and seeing the actions of some others (and we won't discuss any of that), I've decided to flip the script and change the name of the site. With this, I'll also be changing the design (in due time), the direction (hopefully), and how I approach certain things that, again, I won't mention right now. Yes, I'm aware that there are still images/banners/text I need to change. Stay patient. I apologize for leaving out a lot of details here, but this needed to be done, as much as it pains me to actually make such a big change (I mean, OTR has been ours since 2005). We are still the same community, and that part is most important. Since the "8th Anniversary" topic was posted, I found out a lot of things about our current members. I took note of the reactions, the changes, etc...and it definitely helped me make this decision, and will assist me in decisions in the near future. It also enlightened me when it comes to who is around to contribute, and who has been waiting for that day we decide to shut and lock the door. So, everyone, please update your bookmarks ASAP. http://www.discusshoops.com/forums Also, join our new Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/discusshoops If you aren't following us on Twitter (the same page as before, just a new name):

  43. I remember a while back, when I was young, my mom got my dad's belt out of the drawer, and I took off running around the house. Ran into my room, shut my door, and tried to lock it, but realized my room was the only one in the house that didn't have a damn lock, so I jumped over to a chair and tried to prop it up against the handle, and she beat me to the door. She tried beating my ass with the belt, and I grabbed at it, took it from her hands, and took off running outside. I waited for her to come out the front door, then I threw the belt up on the roof and climbed into our tree in the front yard. She couldn't do a damn thing about it until my dad got home, and threatened to throw away my Super Nintendo. I was probably 24 or 25 years old at the time...it sucked.

  44. Before I start explaining anything...do not abuse this privilege. You guys have been fine without it for six years, and I won't hesitate to go back to the word filter. I just want to give you guys some breathing room, and most of you are older teens or adults to begin with. So, please, don't jump into a topic and post a word 50 times, over and over, just because I'm doing this. Also, I'm asking that we still keep the post quality high. Our quality has been very good. Dropping the filter can have a negative effect, but I trust that we'll be fine. http://www.otrbasketball.com/forums/topic/18178-drop-the-word-censor Most wanted it done, so hopefully, this is going to be a good idea. Activity can pick up, members who left in the past because of the filter (no idea why anyone would do that) can change their mind, and we can make it work. There are two words in the ban filter...one is a racial slur, one is usually related to homosexuals. Those won't be posted because they'll be used to personally attack members, and I'm not going to lay that out on the table for everyone to grab. It won't really be a trial period, but I'll pay close attention to our post quality, and I'll make the best decision for the site when it's all said and done. OTR houses some of the best basketball posters out there, and we've sacrificed our activity to eliminate all of our trolls (most forums welcome trolls, to promote the baiting and activity, and the outcome is the site losing their best members). Everyone here seems mature enough to handle it, so I suppose I should say thanks for that as well. I wouldn't run a site if it contained a bunch of adolescent teens that spent their time trashing other sites, their own community, and posting worthless posts.

  47. The simple fact that someone took all of your guys' hard work, that's it. Nothing else. OTR only gives back to me by providing me with discussion and knowledge. I actually lose time and money doing it, just like someone trying to get rich would. Nearly six years has gone by, and I've seen nothing from it, and never will. It doesn't compare. Nope, didn't care. Made that decision off the wall one day, and already had it up and preparing it for everyone a couple of days later. I told Harry one day that I didn't even want to be on staff at JBB anymore, and that he should be glad he's not. I didn't want anything to do with sites at one point, until Dee, Erin and Jesse were getting hated on (sexually and racially) in AIM chats by a couple of JBB staff members. There was no dream, no goal, no nothing. No relation whatsoever to getting rich. You can't say that because it's an inaccurate statement. Those paralyzed may believe they will walk again, but nothing they do guarantees it. Chances are pretty slim to none for a lot of people in that position. I actually hope everyone reads the following, even though it's a book. Setting your mind to something doesn't mean it'll happen. You expect someone to, say, continue their dream of inventing something valuable to all of us, but at some point, they are going to need to focus on their well-being, their family, and that takes a paycheck. Nobody in their right mind is going to live a lonely life, mooching off of others and not doing anything to get by, just to try and invent something and avoid holding down a full-time job. Someone I know (a landlord) has numerous houses. I'll relate it to one of your own comments from earlier. Let's just say he makes $10k a month on rent, $120k a year. In eight years, he'll have a million? No, because he's probably spending at least $60k a year just living and providing for his family, maybe more than that. Double that 8.3 years and you get nearly 17. Also, he has taxes to pay on his houses, along with repairs/maintenance every year if he's a good landlord (he owns the houses, you don't). He also has to pay off his loans. He didn't steal 15-20 houses for free...some cost anywhere between $50k to $150k in my area. That 17 years turns into many, many more. Dan (the landlord I know) is in his mid-40s, has been doing this since he was in his 20s, and he's definitely not rich. He's still paying on a couple of his houses. People that live in this fantasy land don't realize what it's like to be down and out. People can definitely recover, but it takes a long time, and things rarely change. When I say down and out, I'm not talking about not having money to buy an ESPN magazine until Friday, I'm talking about things like having to work on the weekends despite having major spinal cord surgery (my dad), designing sites and staring at a computer despite having one eye patched and the other blurry, needing to blow up text 4x larger just to read it (me). Unfortunate events get in the way, and that's life. However, even without those unfortunate events, it's extremely difficult to get rich. There are families that go years without having a major situation to tend to, but while this guy wishes he was the CEO of the production factory he works for, he needs the manual labor because, without it, he has no money for a house, a car, food, gas, or anything. Most everyone doesn't get rich because life happens. Nobody ever turns down the opportunity, and not even crackheads give up trying to make as much money as they can. People end up realizing that they have to stop living through their dreams and start living for themselves, their family and even others around them. There's a guy I went to high school with, almost 10 years ago, that is still trying to rap and make money. Most everyone I know thinks he's just a bum sitting in a studio his dad bought him when he was 17, not working and still living with his parents, no girlfriend. Why do we think that? Because it's true. He's actually a decent rapper, but as stated over and over again, life is eventually going to consume him, or else he's going to be 17 for the rest of that life. Right now, it would be nice to be rich. I'd pay everything off...my house, my car, my medical bills, maybe go overseas and try to get an artificial lens implanted (in clinical trials right now). But, at some point, it hit me that it's not going to happen, and that I need to start providing for myself and for my girlfriend immediately, and helping out my parents (mainly my dad) in the process. How about you tell us, in just one sentence, what will make you rich. It shouldn't take more than one sentence. I just want to know what you're going to sell, invent, or manage, and how many years you think it'll take. Nothing more. You'll keep preaching how anything can be accomplished as long as we set our minds to it, but that's a parent talking to their young and naive kids. A parent dreams their kids become bigger than they are, so they will feed them BS to make both parties feel comfortable and confident. I spent years of my life (and still do to this day) working on my game (basketball). I took 300 shots a night, every night, for months at a time, and would dribble in the basement for hours when it was cold outside, go to the gym and just work out and shoot the ball, shoot free throws, do defensive slides, all outside of school. It never turned me into a potential Division I college basketball player, skill-wise. I believe I'm pretty good, but not to that level, and I know I've reached my peak, 110% sure of it, even though I still work on my game to this day. Still go out to the park, nearly every day, and shoot the ball and play pick-up games. Not everyone can be rich. Not everyone has that opportunity. You need to try and find a way to meet people that are far, far less fortunate than you or the average person...young adults that grew up struggling, little education, then no money for college and maybe one parent to feed them and push them to get a job at McDonald's. Maybe he's no super freak of an athlete, has no rap skills...just a typical human, like most of us, but in an extremely binding situation that, really, he has to live for and live with. There may be a couple of people on here that relate to exactly what I said, too. If ANYONE on this site knows about dreams crashing down and people struggling in general, it's me. My diabetes didn't seem to exist at one point, I was so wrapped up in making money, becoming an excellent basketball player, staying up late for college, and riding my financial wave through fantasy land. I needed to save up what I could to get my education, and part of the resolution was to not buy as much insulin and test strips (talking hundreds of dollars a month) or eat the right foods (more hundreds), so I was skipping shots and not testing my blood sugars often. I won't need to tell you the result of that once again. Set the bar too high, and you'll be walking under it the rest of your life. I'm honestly done talking about it. I'm sure everyone else will be as well.

  49. A few major issues I have... -Yes, Fisher and Harper's numbers were close in the years you specified, but Harper was a MUCH better player. He was bigger, more versatile and created matchup problems. Not to mention you completely ignored FG % and only look at 3pt %. Harper shot 9% better overall from the field than Fisher, and that is a much bigger difference than Fisher's edge in 3pt shooting. Also, Harper took a greatly reduced role with the Bulls. He was a 20/6/5 player the year before he joined Chicago. To give you an idea, the Hawks gave Joe Johnson the biggest contract out of any FA this summer for virtually the same production. Harper was a much better player than Fisher. -How in the world is Artest a better defender than Pippen? Pippen was arguably the best perimeter defender in NBA history. When Artest was in his prime you might have some ground to say that, but he's not the same defensive player he once was. Even though awards are overrated, in 1996 Pippen was in the middle of a string of 7 straight All-Defensive First Team selections. Meanwhile Artest has made only one All-Defensive team in the last 4 seasons (and that was only a 2nd Team selection). Artest is also NOWHERE NEAR the offensive player Pippen was. Pippen is what made the offensive attack so versatile and dangerous. Artest doesn't make anywhere near the impact Pippen did, and so the advantage for the Bulls in this matchup is enormous. -I would say Rodman/Gasol is a push. You are severely underrating Rodman's defense just because he didnt block shot. He was arguably the greatest defender and rebounder in NBA history. Even though he was undersized, he would have given Gasol fits with his speed, toughness, hands and IQ. Not to mention he dominated the glass more than any player currently in the league ever has, including Dwight Howard. That alone would help take away one of LA's biggest strength. -I would have given the Bulls bench the edge. Much more consistent and the 3pt shooting was lethal (Kukoc over 40% from 3, Kerr at over 51%). You never knew what ANY of the Lakers bench players would give the team on a nightly basis. With the Bulls, there was stability. Look, I understand the Lakers have talent, but we are comparing them to a team that was #1 in offense and #1 in defense the same year. We're talking the most dominant single-season team in NBA history. Some stats from the Bulls' 1996 season... -The Bulls outscored teams by THRITEEN(!) points per game. -The Bulls outrebounded teams by over SIX boards per game. -The Bulls averaged FIVE more assists than opponents. -The Bulls forced 3 more turnovers than they gave up. -The Bulls shot 48% from the floor and 40% from 3. -Three of the five starters were selected to the All-Defensive First Team in 1996. -Against Shaq's Magic, Zo's Heat and Ewing's Knicks in the playoffs, the Bulls lost one combined game. It goes on and on and on...
