  1. Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo shot 50.8 percent from the field last season, but made just 33 percent of his shots from 16-23 feet.

Boston coach Doc Rivers wants to see Rondo improve in that department.

"We want him to shoot the right shots," Rivers said. "The 3-point shot, I could care less. I could care less if he takes another 3 the rest of his career as far as I'm concerned. But we have to get him to make the elbow jump shot."

Rivers' top priority is for Rondo to improve as a free throw shooter. The point guard is a 63 percent shooter from the line for his career.

"I think when he becomes a better free throw shooter it'll make him a better driver," Rivers said. "I think, unfortunately it happened in the Finals, when he started missing free throws he stopped driving. That's what all guys do."

SAN FRANCISCO -- The official start of Matt Barnes' time with the defending champions may be two months away, but it seems he's already achieved his dream.

His "Dream Team," which includes Philadelphia's Jason Kapono, downed the San Francisco City Gold Rush 90-88 on Wednesday night to win the title in this late-summer Pro-Am league. After winning a best-of-three series in two games, the newest Laker is surrounded by stench and adulation in the back of a dingy locker room inside Kezar Pavilion.

Life as a role player will resume soon enough, but Barnes is the Kobe Bryant of this realm.

The red shirts bear his name -- Matt Barnes Ent. -- and teammates who can only dream of his good hoops fortune all compliment his game. They take pictures, sharing hugs and handshakes while the wild crowd waits outside. This celebration ends in true Barnes form, with a message at the huddle break that he surely must have scripted beforehand.

"Make 'em hate us," they yell.

The nine-year veteran had that very effect on the Lakers back on March 7, when he spent most of his 32 minutes bumping and breathing all over Bryant in a 96-94 Orlando win at Amway Arena. The night was a memorable one by the regular season's standards, a possible NBA Finals preview in which Barnes' ball fake at Bryant's nose on an inbounds pass sparked tough talk afterward.

Lakers small forward Lamar Odom called Barnes a "monkey" and an "action figure" for his antics, then vowed to never let such a scene happen again. Barnes shot back via Twitter, saying Odom should keep his name out of his mouth lest the then-Magic small forward "put my sons (expletive) diaper in it."

The name-calling has long since stopped, though. And in a move that might win the award for most unexpected free agency union of the summer, Barnes' two-year, $4 million deal signed last month means they're calling each other teammates now.

It's the newest Laker trend, apparently, this penchant for rewarding anyone who is fearless and defiant when matched up against Bryant. Ron Artest was the first to take that path to Los Angeles, challenging Bryant throughout the 2009 Western Conference semifinals while with Houston and later becoming a key piece to the Lakers' repeat effort. Yet while Artest's fuse has clearly lengthened over the years, Barnes showed just days ago that he is as fiery as ever.

NEW YORK -- The guys on the Heat knew they would get some heat. But they didn't think there would be this much simmering.

Since Miami formed a superteam last month by re-signing Dwyane Wade and inking free agents LeBron James and Chris Bosh, James has received widespread criticism for how he handled his Cleveland exit and Bosh has been blasted by Bryan Colangelo, his former general manager in Toronto.

"It think it's unfair,'' Bosh said in an interview Wednesday with FanHouse about how much criticism has surfaced related to how Miami's team was put together. "But that's the nature of the business. We kind of knew we were putting X's on our backs before coming into this situation. You should know that it's going to happen. People are backlashing at it. But you've got to remember we're all human. You have to understand.''

  4. Shaquille O'Neal says that Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace is thinking about playing next season despite the expectation that he'll retire.

Wallace told Boston during the NBA Finals that, despite having two years and nearly $13 million left on his contract, he was planning to retire.

"I know Rasheed is thinking about coming back," said O'Neal. "Rasheed, go on and come back for one or two more years."

The Celtics have been looking for a trade partner to take on Wallace's contract and the cap relief that will come with it should he retire.

Detroit Hasn't Decided On Making Offer To McGrady

Pistons general manager Joe Dumars has confirmed that the team is considering signing Tracy McGrady.

However, Dumars added that Detroit has yet to decide whether or not they'll make the free-agent swingman an offer.

"GM Joe Dumars tells Y! Sports that Detroit's had internal talks on Tracy McGrady, but haven't decided on extending him an offer," Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports wrote on his Twitter page.

  6. The Pistons have been linked to free-agent swingman Tracy McGrady and ESPN.com's Marc Stein points out that they have been shopping two of their current wing players.

Detroit has been making both Tayshaun Prince and Richard Hamilton available via trade.

"Pistons have been shopping Rip and Tayshaun for ages, so logjam at SG and SF might not continue to be logjam if deal ever materializes," Stein wrote on his Twitter page.

  7. Despite signing Keith Bogans, the Bulls are still open to dealing for Trail Blazers guard Rudy Fernandez.

Chicago has offered to absorb Fernandez's $1.25 million salary for 2010-11 with cap space in exchange for a future first-round pick, according to sources.

However, Portland believes they can do better.

It's widely assumed that the Trail Blazers want Taj Gibson back if they are to deal Fernandez to the Bulls.

Chicago isn't making Gibson available, but they are open to trading James Johnson.

  8. I like it, just looks unfinished for some reason. Definitely has a very fresh, clean look to it, but it could use a lil something else. Maybe some texture to the Staples Center portion of the sig, and a little bit of a color tone? I don't know, but I like it regardless.

Very clean. I would move the text closer to the render though.

Thanks for the feedback, you guys. Maybe if I do move the text closer, it might not look as empty on the side with the Staples Center? I felt it was a bit empty too in that area, but I just wasn't sure what else to add. Played around with some brushes and patterns but thanks for the suggestions!

  9. CHICAGO (AP)-- A person with knowledge of the deal says free agent Keith Bogans has agreed to a deal with the Chicago Bulls.

The person tells The Associated Press the deal is guaranteed for one year with a team option for a second. The person was granted anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

The swingman spent last season in San Antonio, where he averaged 4.4 points in 79 games. Bogans becomes the latest addition to a team that has signed Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver and Ronnie Brewer this summer.

  10. Brian Scalabrine wants to remain in the NBA, but hasn't been getting many offers as an unrestricted free agent.

"I don't know what my plans are," Scalabrine said Thursday. "I'm just keeping it wide open. I've got good offers overseas, but my goal is to play in the States for one more year and see what comes from it."

He underwent surgery last month to clean out particles and remove bone spurs from his shoulder and remains in rehabilitation.

Scalabrine said he has had some conversations with the Celtics, but the club is running out of roster spots.

"The thing you have to realize is I don't sweat things out of my control," he said.

"Based on this year, I knew I would have to be patient. If I had to go to Europe and play I will go do Europe and play. My kids are going to go to great schools in Europe and they are going to learn the culture over there and take it as a learning experience and 10 years from now, I am going to call back and say, 'remember when we lived in Barcelona for three years?'"

  11. Portland center Greg Oden remains optimistic that he'll make a successful return to the court this coming season.

Oden fractured the patella in his left knee on Dec. 5, which forced him to miss the remainder of the 2009-10 season.

"It happened in a game against the Houston Rockets," Oden said. "I was going up to block a shot [by Aaron Brooks]. I jumped in the air and my kneecap just broke in half. There actually wasn't that much pain. The look of it was actually worse than the pain. They [doctors] told me that if I had kept my leg straight, I could have walked on it right after it happened. There was really nothing I could have done. They said the force of my jump — the way I jump, how my legs were — was at least 400 pounds.

"I got surgery the next day. I'm still in rehab, but I'm getting really close to where I want to be for the start of the season. [The rehab process] has been very long — a lot of ups and downs, good days and bad days. But things are looking good."

Oden didn't go into details about the actual rehabilitation he's been doing, but stressed that he's focused.

"I've just been working out," he said from his hometown of Terre Haute. "I've been here and Indianapolis. I've been working out really hard with some people who are really good for me ... basically changing my lifestyle, just getting myself right and being around people who I know and grew up with.

"Doctors have told me that I should be 100 percent by the time it's all healed. I can't predict the future, but I know I'm preparing myself right now to be an [NBA] All-Star."

  12. BOSTON (AP)—Now that he’s signed with the Boston Celtics, Shaquille O’Neal(notes) is looking for a nickname that will fit in with his new city.

The Celtics’ website trumpeted the signing of “The Big Shamrock” this week, when O’Neal signed a deal that will reportedly pay him the veterans’ minimum over the next two seasons.

O’Neal wrote on Twitter: “hello green town. ok what u got 4 nicknames? make um good.”

In a variety of online polls, “The Big Shamrock” and “The Big Leprechaun” are leading the way along with “The Green Monster.” Also receiving votes: “The Jolly Green Giant,” “The Shamroq,” “Red Auershaq,” “Shaqachusetts” and “Tip-in O’Neal.”

No word yet from O’Neal on whether he has a preference.

O’Neal has been known as “Shaq-Daddy,” “The Big Shaqtus” in Phoenix and “The Big Witness” in Cleveland.

this is going to be interesting..

  13. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Friday that the team hasn't ruled out signing free-agent swingman Tracy McGrady.

However, he added that Chicago's top priority is to sign another shooter.

"It's how a guy fits into your team," Thibodeau said on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "He's had a long, distinguished career. He's had injuries, and durability is an issue, but I still think he can help a team."

The new coach was then asked if McGrady could help the Bulls.

"I don't know specifically our team," he said. "I think how things play out, we're still weighing it as a possibility. We haven't ruled it out, but again we feel we have to add more shooting. So right now, that's what we're putting a premium on."

While Thibodeau didn't seem optimistic about Chicago signing McGrady, he downplayed reports that the veteran performed poorly in a workout with the team.

"I thought his workout was fine," Thibodeau said. "I think sometimes those things are overstated, when a guy comes in and it's 1-on-0.

"I've coached Tracy, so I know what he brings to the table. The best thing he probably does is his playmaking, and people overlook that. He's a great passer, and he's a great decision-maker."
