Went to Coyotes/Red Wings in Glendale tonight. Had a great time. So, in the past 2 weeks, I have seen games in two of America's "worst" NHL markets (the other being Columbus) and have had great times. Would love to see the game succeed in both places.

  2. Yes things seem to finally be turning around for both our teams, knew this day would come eventually as your teams biggest weakness was age

I'd say our biggest weakness is, by far, our general manager. Age wouldn't be an issue if the farm system wasn't needlessly destroyed.

Not to mention an awful drafting strategy over the past 5 or 6 years that has not worked out at all, but I guess that can't be blamed totally on Amaro.

  3. That's a bit dramatic.  The fact is, the Flyers have pieces, and that's what matters in today's NHL, when making you can go from being bottom 5 to top 5 in your conference in literally just one year.  Having Giroux and Brayden up the middle is going to be rock solid for the next decade, and then wingers like Simmonds, Read, Voracek, et al. will help round out that top 6 nicely.  I question where Couturier fits in - is he your 3rd line center going forward, ala Jordan Staal?  Or does he move into the top 6, shifting Brayden or Giroux to the wing?  His production has been a massive disappointment for me, but you'd probably have to watch him every night to really glean what he brings to the table.

I think the biggest problem is Philly isn't really sure what they want to be.  Are they rebuilding/retooling? Or are they trying to win?  There is a market out there for guys like Timmonen, Hartnell and Briere (not sure if they have NTC/NMC's?) should they decide to get younger, and start over.

The back end is a mess there, with a ton of money tied up.  Philly wouldn't be in a terrible position to take this year and next to rebuild the farm through the draft and trades, even if it means missing the playoffs both years.  It wouldn't take long, seeing as there are a ton of young, good players who are already contributing.  I just don't think their GM is willing to do it, he reminds me a lot of Colangelo.  Some patience would go a long way for this franchise, IMO.

More likely, is Philly makes a bunch of band-aid moves this summer.

I really don't think it's too dramatic. Sure they have a few pieces, but every single one is already a top 6 NHL forward. That's it. Not really anything else of value in the entire organization except for Scott Laughton and this upcoming 1st round pick. Then, consider the cap situation, and you can probably understand why I am worried.

As for Couturier...he has shown signs of turning his offensive game around, but he still has a lot of work to do there. Very inconsistent, but he has not been getting a lot of ice time lately. Seems to be in Laviolette's doghouse, which is silly to me. If there are any positives to be gained from this season, his development would be at the top of the list. Defensively, he is already an absolute stud.

I don't think there is such a thing as "rebuild" for the Flyers, so I don't see them conceding this season any time soon, as dumb as that seems. Ed Snider is getting old, he won't let it happen in his lifetime.

  4. Grantland summed this mess up perfectly...

What’s gone wrong: [Takes deep breath … ] The Flyers are stuck in 11th place in the East, their coach is on the hot seat, their “best player in the world” has been merely good, they traded one of the league’s top 10 goal scorers, they reacquired a former player from the Kings but not one of the good ones, their best player just basically retired, and the backup goaltender they exiled to Columbus is playing way better than their $51 million starter. Oh, and they’re the only team in the league that’s over the cap. In other words, everything.

Yep, couldn't really put it any better myself. Except I might have mentioned that our farm system is among the worst, if not the worst, in the league.

  5.

I'm glad the Eagles are changing the idea of going out and grabbing the big names instead they are just plugging in quality players in where the need is and making sure its better than whats already there.

    Total FA Signings So Far:

    • - Patrick Chung (S)
    • - Kenny Phillips (S)
    • - Ed Wang (OL)
    • - Connor Barwin (DL)
    • - Cary Williams (CB)
    • - Bradley Fletcher (CB)
    • - Jason Phillips (LB)
    • - Issac Sopoaga (NT)
    • - James Casey (TE/FB)

It's really funny to see how Reid is going out and grabbing all the big names. Really makes it clear that Howie wasnt the one making all those calls they so called year of the Dream Team bs.

Are the Cowboys even awake in the last week? lol

Yep, Andy had full control here for quite a while, especially after Banner and Heckert left.

I really dig the approach this offseason. For a variety of reasons, I did not see nearly as much NFL as I'd have liked last season so I won't comment on the individual players we signed, but I am loving the scouting reports I am reading (and getting from Kyle!!!). Of course, none of it really matters until we see exactly what sort of team Chip Kelly is trying to build. But they seem to be addressing all positions of need with low risk/somewhat high reward guys, which is exactly what I wanted.

  6. As Bob continues to play very well for the Blue Jackets, the Bryz contract could not look any worse.

For the record, I don't hate the Bobrovsky trade on the surface...given the Bryz contract, Bob had to go. No point to keeping him here. I just hate that the team was in a position where they had to trade him. Too bad they didn't hang onto him until after the new CBA...would make a Bryz amnesty a slam dunk. Between that situation, the Schenn/JvR trade, and the generally bad play of the team, could not be a more disappointing year.

  7. I'd love for this to become a big deal some day. I think it definitely has the potential to. For now, though, it's hard to take it super seriously, especially when team USA is managed by a man who thinks it is acceptable to bat Giancarlo Stanton 7th...

    Batting 8th tonight btw.

  8. I went to the Blue Jackets-Red Wings game in Columbus on Saturday. Really cool place. The Blue Jacket fans were way more impressive than I expected.

Speaking of impressive, the game happened to be Sergei Bobrovsky's first career shutout. Which made me happy and sad at the same time.

With that said, it's pretty awesome that (somewhat) meaningful baseball is back, so I am enjoying it.
