  1. Leon Powe signed with Cleveland on Wednesday, even though the forward probably would have preferred to remain in Boston.

“I think that his preference would have been to stay with Boston,” Powe’s agent Aaron Goodwin said by telephone on Wednesday. “That didn’t work out. He’s got a great opportunity with a great organization that happens to be one of the best teams in the league. Good things happen to good people.”

  2. Kurt Rambis has long been mentioned as a potential replacement candidate for the Lakers following Phil Jackson's eventual retirement.

But he appears fully committed to the situation in Minnesota.

"He was after the same thing that we were after," Wolves owner Glen Taylor said. "We both talked about a four-year contract. That's what he wanted and I think that's what we wanted, to tie him up so that he would stay here for the long run. I don't think we're in to releasing him for the Lakers. I think he is here to build this team and get the good part of it when we get to winning."

Rambis said he is "absolutely committed" to the Wolves, adding: "I'm not going to look back. I made this decision to come here, I'm here, and I told Glen Taylor I'm here for the long term. I want to go through the whole process, be here from the start and I want to finish it."

  3. The Orlando Magic are keeping tabs on free agent Mike Wilks as they look to add a third point guard to their roster.

Wilks signed with Orlando last offseason, but was sidelined with a knee injury and eventually traded in the three-way deal that brought Rafer Alston to the Magic.

While Orlando is still weighing their options, they have been keeping an eye on Wilks' health and availability, sources tell RealGM's Alex Kennedy.

Orlando cannot offer more than a minimum contract and Wilks can likely be had for that price.

  4. After Hedo Turkoglu backed out of a verbal agreement with Portland in order to sign with the Raptors, many felt the Blazers let a top player slip away.

But Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith didn't agree.

In a conversation with Blazers' general manager Kevin Pritchard, Smith told Pritchard that he had "caught a break" with Turkoglu signing elsewhere and made it clear the Blazers "weren't missing out on anything," sources tell RealGM's Alex Kennedy.

Smith didn't feel that Turkoglu was worth the five-year, $50 million Portland was ready to spend.

Turkoglu spent five seasons in Orlando before signing with Toronto.

  5. Timberwolves star Al Jefferson says that he will definitely be ready for training camp.

"I feel like I could play contact right now," Jefferson said, according to the Pioneer Press. "The only thing, I know I'm not in shape. If I could play a halfcourt game right now, I would kill you."

He had knee-ligament surgery midway through the 2008-09 season.

  6. Cavs Sign Leon Powe

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent forward Leon Powe to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Powe, 25, played in 70 games (seven starts) this past season for the Boston Celtics and averaged 7.7 points on .524 shooting and a career-best 4.9 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. In his seven starts, he averaged 14.3 points on .576 shooting, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 25.9 minutes per game.

“Leon is a high quality player and person. His tough, gritty play has already contributed in big playoff games during his young career,” Ferry said. “As he continues to work rehabilitating his injury, we would look to hopefully see him return towards the end of the season.”
