Peja, Bayless to TOR for Jack, Andersen, Banks

The New Orleans Hornets and Toronto Raptors are in serious discussions on a five-player trade that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks, a source told ESPN.com Saturday.

 

The deal was close to being completed Friday night, but was held up over the amount of cash the Hornets would send to the Raptors in the trade.

 

Still, the holdup was not believed to be insurmountable, according to a source with direct knowledge of the talks, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

 

Stojakovic is in the final year of his contract, earning $14.25 million, and has fallen out of the rotation in New Orleans, averaging just 7.5 points in less than 15 minutes per game playing behind Marco Belinelli, whom the Hornets acquired in another trade with the Raptors during the summer.

If this trade actually goes down the only benefit is Peja's 14.25 million comes off the books at the end of the season which would allow the raptors to continue to rebuild this team.

I think it’s clear that Peja is washed up and overpaid but that’s not the point of this trade if it goes down. The Raptors are losing Bank's $4.8 million dollar expiring contract and Andersen's $2.5 million dollar expiring meanwhile shedding Jack's roughly half million increase for the next season. This amounts to $7 million in expiring contracts if we were to keep the three players.

 

If this deal does go down taking Peja's $14.25 million dollar expiring contract and adding Bayless' $0.7 million increase next season would allow the raptors to shed $13.5 mil in an expiring contract. Therefore we'd actually be lowering our cap space by about $6.5 million

I think that would be great for the Raptors. Even though it's the beginning of the season, Jack is still disappointing me because I really had high expectations for him this season. Calderon is a bad defender but he's playing well and I think he deserves the starting role this year. Giving up Andersen Banks and Jack wouldn't really bother me. Getting a great 3 point shooter like Peja and a great athletic and young player with a lot of potential like Bayless would really satisfy me. He would make a great job off the bench being the back up point guard.

I really really like this deal for the Raptors, get Bayless who I think is a future solid, starting level PG and cut some.

 

I also feel the Hornets could have used that expiring to get an impact player but oh well.

I always been a fan of Bayless, I think he just needs a chance and Toronto is the place for him.

 

With Peja it brings expiring contact and adds the Euro Love we have in Toronto.

Bayless hasn't done much in New Orleans, and Stojakovic is garbage, so in essence, they're getting a backup PG who can also play at the 2 in Jarrett Jack. They also get an extra big man, and are able to go under the luxury tax.

 

Every move made by the new management in New Orleans have worked out well for them, so I trust them.

 

It's pretty obvious the Hornets are doing this to save money. They save around $5 mill making this deal and get a quality guard in return.

Or, you know, they like the fact that he is a $15M expiring contract. But no, that can't be why they traded for him. They clearly want him because they think he is worth the contract.

 

I like this trade for Toronto. It sucks to lose Jack but he seems to be using this team similar to what Mike James did a few years back, which is to chuck up shots and inflate his numbers. He has been absolutely awful this season and has played with complete tunnel vision. Maybe it is because he knew the team wasn't going to make the playoffs and was just fed up with not playing on a playoff team, but he has played very poorly.

 

Peja can be a nice mentor for DeRozan, Weems and Kleiza. Whether he plays or not is irrelevant to me because his contract is the real asset. If he can teach DeRozan and Weems a thing or two about shooting then it will be fantastic. Even if he is a huge bust and the Raptors let him expire at the end of the year, I'm fine with that as well.

 

I like picking up Bayless as well. He hasn't shown much in his career so far, but he will be given a chance in Toronto that he has yet to receive anywhere else. He isn't a pure point gaurd and is a score first guard, but he has talent and if he can put it together he could be a nice spark plug off of the bench. Worst case scenario is he is another young asset to the team.

 

The Raptors are quickly putting themselves in a very nice position fincancially. They have a lot of flexibility at the deadline with roughly $23M in expiring contracts between Peja, Reggie and Wright and the $14M or so TPE from the Bosh trade. If they can parlay some of these assets into a young player or a draft pick or something like that, it would be awesome.

 

Best of all is that the Raptors save roughly $3M in salary for next season. It would be awesome if they could lure somebody like Marc Gasol away from Memphis with their cap space.

A young prospect like Bayless and a $15 million expiring should get you a whole lot more at the February trade deadline.

This is clearly a win-now season for the Hornets so I like this deal. They get a very solid PG in Jack and a big man who can shoot the ball in Andersen. As for Raptors...well, good luck to them. I do like them getting Bayless though.

With Jose being so good off the bench and so bad as a starter, a couple good games and Bayless and he could very well wind up being the starter. From the get go he will be getting 20-25 minutes a night though by default, unless Barbosa comes back quickly.

 

A player like Sonny Weems or David Anderson got an opportunity here and took it and ran, especially Sonny. This is as good an opportunity Bayless will get to show he belongs in the NBA.

No way in hell should the Raptors bench DeRozan in favour of Bayless and with the way that Weems has been playing as of late, he shouldn't either. I'm all for giving Bayless every opportunity to play, but he should not immediately come in and take over Weems starting spot, let alone DeRozan's.

 

If he shows the ability to be effective as a point guard, I'd be fine with him starting at the point as Calderon is more effective as a backup, but he definitely shouldn't be stealing minutes from DeRozan. I like his potential, but developing DeRozan is a lot more important than Bayless.

If you don't start Bayless over DeRozan or Weems (and I don't think you should), you probably shouldn't start him at the point, either. You don't want four of your five starters all wanting to do the same exact thing on the floor if the other is Reggie Evans and not Paul, Nash, Rondo or Williams.
