Long considered the front-runner for the Carolina Panthers head coaching job, Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera is meeting with team owner Jerry Richardson today and is expected to be announced as head coach on Tuesday.

It is known that Rivera has had people put out feelers in an effort to assemble a staff as he closes in on his first head coaching position.

The Panthers were the ninth team with which Rivera has interviewed for a top job since 2006. He has been the Chargers' defensive coordinator since midway through the 2008 season. He served in the same capacity with the Chicago Bears from 2004-06.

Rivera, who turned 49 on Friday, is one of four defensive coordinators the Panthers interviewed last week and the only one to have a second interview.

All three of the Panthers' previous head coaches (Dom Capers, George Seifert and John Fox) were former defensive coordinators.

The Chargers will now need to replace Rivera.

The team is expected to give current assistants such as linebackers coach John Pagano and secondary coach Steve Wilks a look, as well as extend its search to outside candidates.

The Chargers are not expected to allow any of their assistants to leave with Rivera. All of the Chargers' coaches except special teams coordinator Steve Crosby, who was let go last week, agreed to extensions last offseason.
All the other guys have been told they're working with Rivera at the moment. Nothing's done until it's done, but this is pretty much done.
Blackberry officially a part of my head now. Here's the deal, barring some kind of tragic gravy boat accident at dinner, this thing is done.
Hopefully the rumors are true and he brings in the Chargers QB coach in as OC and he can hopefully fix Clausen.
