Built Ford Tough Posted January 3, 2012 Report Share Posted January 3, 2012 The Rockets’ Marcus Morris, the 14th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, is being sent to Houston’s D-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Houston Chronicle reports. The move is being made as Morris lost his spot in Rockets coach Kevin McHale’s rotation and the team is not scheduled to have another practice until next week. After playing a total of 17 minutes in Houston’s first three games, Morris did not get on the floor in the fourth game against Atlanta on Saturday. He has totals of five points and two rebounds this season. “Fortunately, we’re a team it’s very hard to come in as a rookie and play,” Rockets GM Daryl Morey told The Chronicle. “We like all our young players to go through a process before they get on the floor. Marcus is someone with very high level of talent and someone we feel will benefit greatly from playing and working on his game.” With Patrick Patterson hurt, Morris had been playing power forward. A good move on their part to send him down so that he will be able to work on his perimeter skills in the hopes of him being able to slide in at the 3 later on in the season. Dash Posted January 4, 2012 Report Share Posted January 4, 2012 No surprise, the Rockets seem to take this process every year with their top rookies by sending them to the D-League early in the season and then working them into the rotation. The Rockets do not have a scheduled practice until next week so it makes sense to send Morris down to the Vipers where he'll have an easier schedule and work with a team that runs the same offense as us. Plus the Rockets want Morris to develop his game as a small forward and Morey is very confident that Morris eventually will be a true 3. Dash Posted January 7, 2012 Report Share Posted January 7, 2012 Yeah I don't doubt that Morris could /should start for the Rockets right now. However, the Rockets always like to send their rookies down to the D-League (Parsons being the exception) and with virtually no training camp or pratices the Rockets needed a way for Morris to be brought up to speed. The Vipers are our farm league and run the very same system as we do, makes perfect sense to send him down there.
