Point I'm trying to make here is D'Antoni's reputation has been overblown for years. He's always been a great in-season adjuster. He lost Amare twice in his stint with Phoenix, management brought in Shaq, and even lost Joe Johnson to free agency. He's smart enough to adjust to the Lakers personnel, and you're crazy if you think he's bringing the seven seconds or less offense to LA. He has his flaws, he's notorious for playing 7-8 man lineups, even in the regular season, his offenses generally rely on floor spacing (which doesn't come at a premium in LA), and he doesn't have a great systematic approach to defense, but by no means is this signing something to be down on. And Miami was an awfully coached offense the first year of the Big 3 and I believe their offense was ranked top 5 in the league that season. Just because Phoenix was around league average (a lot of which had to do with the pace coaxing other teams into quick, long jumpers) doesn't mean he resembles anything of a decent defensive coach. Owner Real Deal Posted November 13, 2012 Owner Report Share Posted November 13, 2012 Word is that the Lakers are going to reach out to Nate McMillan as an assistant (which will help our defense), and I believe we're still going to keep Steve Clifford, the same guy that coached under SVG in Orlando. I read somewhere that Clifford didn't get to do much in the preseason, or in those first five games...which makes sense, since Brown was the "defensive specialist" among all of the coaches. I think D'Antoni will be okay, as long as he doesn't run our guys to death, and keeps from relying on Nash 100% of the time he's on the floor. I just don't see the fit here. Either way I think the Clippers are the best team out West right now. That can obviously change though moving forward. That could be sick. That would be very convenient for Steve Nash. He wouldn't have lay on the floor any more when he gets subbed out. And I'm not so sure about signing Nate McMillan. He doesn't necessarily have a strong resume. I was reading up a little about him and I thought this was pretty interesting: The highest a Nate McMillan coached NBA team ever finished in defensive efficiency is 14th. His teams averaged a ranking of 20 in 12 years. Then again there aren't that many big time names out there, atleast as far as I can think of.
