Cavs Sign Leon Powe

Recommended Posts

Free-agent forward Leon Powe will sign a two-year contract for the league minimum with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday if the team’s doctors are satisfied with the progress of his injured left knee, a league source said.

Powe tore his anterior cruciate ligament and cartilage in his knee during Game 2 of the Boston Celtics’ first-round series against the Chicago Bulls. He had reconstructive surgery on May 5 – his third major knee surgery – and has been rehabilitating in Los Angeles. Powe hopes to be back on the court by this season’s All-Star break, and the Cavaliers are willing to take a low-risk gamble on him pending the results of his physical.

The Cavaliers will hold the option for the contract’s second season.

Powe averaged 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds last season for the Celtics, but became an unrestricted free agent when Boston didn’t make him a qualifying offer.

If Powe returns to health, he could help fill a void on Cleveland’s roster left by the pending departure of Joe Smith. Powe and LeBron James were once AAU teammates.

Last I heard we'd be closer to getting Joe Smith.

But if we can get Powe it'll add some excitement midseason when he returns.

Talk about a huge offseason...we add 3...THREE athletic wings that all can do different things.

Who says we can't matchup now with Orlando and LA?

You really have nothing to lose signing an injured quality player at a minimum... It's only a frickin minimum. Good pickup by Cavs, I'm not sure if he can return to the same healthy state pre-injury though.

I'm also doubtful of a full recovery — this is his third torn ACL. Regardless, he's a strong, hard-working big that should turn in some solid work in spot duty. No risk signing. I like it.

Cavs Sign Leon Powe

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed free agent forward Leon Powe to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Danny Ferry announced today. Per team and league policy, terms of the contract were not released.

Powe, 25, played in 70 games (seven starts) this past season for the Boston Celtics and averaged 7.7 points on .524 shooting and a career-best 4.9 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game. In his seven starts, he averaged 14.3 points on .576 shooting, 8.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 25.9 minutes per game.

“Leon is a high quality player and person. His tough, gritty play has already contributed in big playoff games during his young career,” Ferry said. “As he continues to work rehabilitating his injury, we would look to hopefully see him return towards the end of the season.”
