England WCup bid learns from Obama’s Olympic flop

LONDON (AP)—England won’t be pinning its hopes on a persuasive figure like President Barack Obama in trying to sway FIFA voters to award it the 2018 World Cup.

Football Association chairman David Triesman said Wednesday that the bid to hold soccer’s signature tournament will learn from Chicago’s first-round exit in last week’s 2016 Olympic vote, when Obama failed to sway IOC members during a whirlwind trip to Copenhagen.

“It may be wrong to rely on one stellar figure,” Triesman said. “You may have to do a great deal more than that to earn the right to stage the tournament.”

Earlier Wednesday, FIFA vice president Jack Warner branded the England bid as “lightweight.”

“I don’t think that is an accurate description,” Triesman said. “It was said to me that when South Africa bid there was Nelson Mandela around. There aren’t too many Nelson Mandelas—people who have that international reputation who are thought of in a moral sense as well as political.
