Dash Posted February 15, 2010 Report Share Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) The New York Knicks are getting closer to reaching the Houston Rockets’ demands for Tracy McGrady(notes) and his $23 million expiring contract, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Knicks and Rockets have designed the framework of a deal that would unload New York’s Jared Jeffries(notes), Jordan Hill(notes) and either Al Harrington(notes) or Larry Hughes(notes) for McGrady, Joey Dorsey(notes) and Brian Cook(notes). As talks stood on Monday, the price of dumping the burdensome contract of Jeffries – who is owed $6.9 million next season – comes with the Knicks and Rockets exchanging 2011 first-round picks and the Knicks’ 2012 first-round choice going to Houston. New York also might include a 2010 second-round pick. The Utah Jazz own the Knicks’ first-round pick in 2010. The completion of the deal isn’t imminent, but sources involved in the discussions are increasingly confident that after months of back and forth, which intensified over All-Star weekend, an agreement is within reach. One of the hang-ups in the deal, sources said, could be the Knicks’ inclusion of either Harrington or Hughes. There are slight variations of the trade that would change depending on which of the two veteran Knicks’ expiring contracts are included. With Harrington over Hughes in the deal, the Rockets wouldn’t need to include Cook. For the Knicks, the trade would accomplish two important things: First, it would get Jeffries’ salary cleared out, something general manager Donnie Walsh has tried to do since taking the job. This would give the Knicks even more flexibility to be a major player in this summer’s free-agent market. Also, the Knicks want to take a good look at McGrady and let him play as much of a role as he can handle the rest of the season. They may consider re-signing him for next season, based on his performance. Rockets GM Daryl Morey would get Hill, the untested eighth pick in the 2009 draft, and first-round picks that could prove valuable. This will get the Rockets a significant measure of value for McGrady, who they exiled in December. Curry in any deal is a turn-off to every team in the league, it seems...so Jeffries would be the "consolation prize" for teams wanting to part with players like McGrady and Vujacic. If Houston wants Hill, there's no Harrington, and when you take a young player, you have to take a contract back, which is why Jeffries is in. The Knicks believe McGrady can still play and are hoping he can both lead them to a playoff berth and help convince LeBron James to come to New York this summer. But even if McGrady can do neither, he would allow them to get further under the cap this summer if the deal includes Jared Jeffries. However, the Rockets' asking price is steep if they have to take back Jeffries and the $6.6 million remaining on his contract next year. The same source said the Rockets want expiring contracts, 2009 first-round pick Jordan Hill and future first-rounders from New York to make it happen. That's too rich for the Knicks' blood. While they'd love to clear Jeffries' contract off the books, it'd be too big of a risk. If the Knicks didn't land a marquee free agent or two this summer, then they'd have given away up to three lottery picks for nothing. If the Rockets drop the request for the future 2012 first-rounder, the Knicks might be game for a deal that would send Larry Hughes, Jeffries and Hill to Houston for McGrady. The Knicks and Rockets are reportedly finalizing a trade to send Tracy McGrady to New York. The Knicks have agreed to give the Rockets the right to swap first-round picks in 2011 and the Knicks will send the Rockets their 2012 first-round pick. Details on protections attached to the two picks is the sole issue remaining to be resolved. The trade creates approximately $9.5 million additional salary cap room this summer and gives the Knicks the ability to offer two maximum contracts. Houston is currently waiting for word on the protection of the picks before they finally agree to it.
