  11. The New York Giants have the momentum and confidence to make another Super Bowl run. Just ask them. Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul predicted victory over the Green Bay Packers next Sunday, and provided them with early bulletin-board material. "We are very confident," said Pierre-Paul, after the Giants punished the Falcons 24-2 in an NFC wild-card game. "Last time [the Packers] came in here and they beat us (38-35 on Dec. 4), which they shouldn't have. It's going to be cold and the atmosphere will be theirs, but we're going to be ready to play. We know what's at stake, and we know it's one–and-done. We aren't going to let that happen. We are going to go out there and give all out effort, and we are going to walk away with a win." 12. The status of Peyton Manning with the Colts is absolutely up in the air, and a lot depends on the March 8 deadline for Indy to pick up his $28 million option. While there's been some chatter that the Colts and Manning's camp discussed an extension of that deadline recently, CBS Sports Charley Casserly reported on Sunday's The NFL Today that it's not the case. He also reported that the decision on Manning's option will be made by owner Jim Irsay (not the new general manager) and that there's a darkhorse possibility to land Manning if he doesn't end up back with the Colts: the Arizona Cardinals. "Jim Irsay in interviewing general manager candidates has told them he will make the decision whether Peyton Manning is back," Casserly reported Sunday. "He will not put that on the new general manager. Right now there have been absolutely no discussions according to the Manning camp between Manning and Irsay about extending that deadline. In fact, it would make no sense to me for Manning to agree to that. Why give up the opportunity to talk to other teams? One team to watch? The Arizona Cardinals. They can get out of the Kevin Kolb contract and also Ken Whisenhunt's been down this road before. A veteran quarterback coming in at the end of his career? Kurt Warner." Source: CBS Sports
  13. According to Mike Freeman of CBS Sports, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward's teammates expect the veteran to announce his retirement this offseason. Though Ward started nine of 15 games, his role in the offense was significantly reduced in 2011, with the 35-year-old catching just 46 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns as Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown solidified their roles as starters and Emmanuel Sanders took over the No. 3 receiver role. Ward did not catch a pass during Sunday's 29-23 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos. The Steelers were able to get Ward his 1,000th reception in the regular season. If Ward retires, the four-time Pro Bowl will have gained 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns during his 217-game career, the entirety of which was spent with the Steelers. Source: Mac's Football Blog
  14. The Denver Broncos' victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday turned into a nice payoff for quarterback Tim Tebow in more ways than one. Tebow has an escalator of $250,000 in his contract for each playoff victory assuming he participated in at least 70 percent of Denver's plays during the requisite season, according to an NFL source. Being that he played 73 percent of Denver's plays this season, Tebow cashed in on a quarter-million salary escalator for Sunday's 29-23 overtime victory and could earn another $250,000 with another victory Saturday night at New England against the Patriots in a divisional-round game. Denver's victory, meanwhile, altered offensive coordinator Mike McCoy's immediate itinerary. McCoy was scheduled to interview in Jacksonville on Monday for the Jaguars' head coaching job if Denver had lost Sunday, according to an NFL source. The interview will have to be rescheduled. McCoy is allowed to talk with the Jaguars this week, but it will be challenging with the Broncos' short week of preparation for Saturday's game Source: ESPN
  15. Like most fans, Derek Woodrow wasn't interested in watching the post-game festivities after his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, lost to the New York Giants last Sunday. So after his nephew Larry McAllister refused to change the channel, Woodrow, of Rock Hill, South Carolina, got angry but unlike virtually everybody else on the planet, he didn't unplug the television or leave the room or take a long walk to blow off steam. Instead the 44-year-old allegedly starting throwing punches before trying to beat his nephew with a frying pan and an umbrella. “Larry stated that he told [Woodrow] to stop chasing him and Derek kept trying to assault him with the frying pan and the umbrella,” police stated in the police report. McAllister, who gave up six inches and more than 100 pounds to the 6-4, 285 Woodrow, used a pocket knife to cut his uncle across the abdomen. According to the police report, Woodrow was taken to a local medical facility to treat his injuries while McAllister refused medical treatment on the scene. Source: CBS Sports
  16. Eli Manning shook off a slow start to put together a brilliant game on Sunday, leading his Giants to a 24-2 wild-card playoff victory over the Falcons and punching a ticket to Green Bay next week. For the first 20 minutes of the game, it was a defense-dominant punt-fest, with the only scoring coming when Manning gave the Falcons a safety by committing intentional grounding in the end zone. But late in the second quarter — and throughout the second half — Manning did what Matt Ryan was never able to do: He moved his offense effectively.Manning was superb, passing accurately and in complete command of his offense, while Ryan never really looked comfortable. Manning went 22-of-32 for 277 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Ryan went 24-of-41 for 199 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Giants receivers Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham both turned in big games as well, and Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw effectively shared the running load. Source: Profootballtalk
  17. When it was over, after another three turnovers by the starting quarterback, the head coach offered his undying endorsement. Mark Sanchez was abysmal again yesterday, throwing three interceptions in the Jets season-ending 19-17 loss to the Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium. And afterward, Rex Ryan stood firmly behind the third-year quarterback. “I think he’s the long-term solution,’’ Ryan said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt. He’s won a lot of games for us. We had three interceptions, two by a defensive lineman. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. It’s hard to explain. I know Mark. I think he’s got all the tools to be a great quarterback. He’s been a winning quarterback here. We’ve got to make sure we’re doing everything we can for the New York Jets to be successful.’’ Sanchez finished 21-of-32 for 207 yards, two touchdowns and the three interceptions. “Today wasn’t his best outing, let me put it that way,’’ Ryan said. 18. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning isn’t ready to say his farewells just yet. Discussion of the Colts’ future at quarterback amplified Sunday with a 19-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which officially slotted the Colts with the No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Manning did not offer any predictions of the Colts’ plans, but did say he would have no problem remaining in Indianapolis even if the team adds a quarterback. "I think I can co-exist with any player I’ve ever played with," Manning said, according to the Indianapolis Star. “I think I’ve always been a good teammate that way. But to speculate on who we’re going to draft, that’s probably more for other people to do, not other players." Regardless of the team’s actions in the offseason, Manning is intent on working his way back after missing the entire 2011 season while rehabbing from his third neck surgery. Source: NFL.com
  19. Tony Romo was hurting after the game, but it had nothing to do with his hand. Romo’s injured right hand still was swollen and discolored eight days after he hit it on the helmet of an Eagles defensive end, but the pain Romo felt had nothing to do with the hand and everything to do with the 31-14 loss to the Giants, which ended the Cowboys’ season. “It was there, and you have to deal with it,” Romo said. “You adjusted all week. I didn’t think that had any bearing on the outcome of the football game.” Romo went 29-for-37 for 289 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. In the first half, he was 10 of 12 passes for only 91 yards against a relentless Giants pass. Romo went 19-for-25 for 198 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in hurry-up mode in the second. 20. A season full of public relation nightmares for Santonio Holmes ended with another blow to the New York Jets captain's image. Holmes was not on the field for the final two minutes of the Jets' 19-17 loss Sunday to the Miami Dolphins -- a loss that ended the team's fading playoff hopes -- and Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson said after the game Holmes was benched for behavior issues. "There were guys in the huddle not happy with Santonio's demeanor throughout the game and in the two-minute drill," said Tomlinson, via ESPN. "And they said something to him about it." A source with knowledge of the decision-making process told The Star Ledger that the decision to bench Holmes was made by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer because he had run out of options with a player whom one Jet called a quitter. "He quit," the player said. "It's happened for the past two to three weeks. It's happened all season." Multiple players told the newspaper that Holmes was "moping" throughout the game, and the problems came to a head when Holmes and a teammate began arguing in a huddle during the fourth quarter. "The worst thing that can happen, the worst thing, is when your teammates start to question your passion for the game," Tomlinson said, via The Star Ledger. "That's the worst thing. And I think in that huddle, that's what you saw. When guys looked in his eyes, and he didn't have that fire in his eyes, guys were turned off about that." Holmes was asked at the end of his news conference if he wanted to play for the Jets next year -- Holmes signed a five-year, $50 million deal last offseason with $24 million guaranteed -- and he declined to answer the question. 21. Despite the 31-14 loss to the New York Giants, which ended the Cowboys' season at a disappointing 8-8, owner Jerry Jones gave Jason Garrett another vote of confidence. There had been speculation that Garrett's job might be on the line in the winner-take-all game against the Giants, but Jones repeated what he said Friday. "Unequivocably," Jones said. "I feel that Jason is our coach, and that we can build and do some good things from here. We can take some of the things that we need to do better, and we can address them. I’ve got a lot of confidence in him. He has done a lot of good things here, and he’s learned a lot this year. Hopefully, we all do." Garrett took over from Wade Phillips at mid-season in 2010 and led the Cowboys to a 5-3 finish, giving him a 13-11 record in a season and a half as Dallas' head coach. The Cowboys have not been to the playoffs since 2009. Source: Star-Telegram
  22. The St. Louis Rams have fired head coach Steve Spagnuolo, Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reports. Hired in 2009, the Rams were just 10-38 under Spagnuolo losing 14+ games in two of the last three seasons. St. Louis showed improvement in 2010, finishing 7-9 and coming within one game of an NFC West title, but regressed to 2-14 in 2011. Prior to coaching the Rams, Spagnuolo spent two seasons as the New York Giants defensive coordinator and eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, as a coaching assistant (1999-2000), defensive backs coach (2001-03) and linebackers coach (2004-06) under the legendary Jim Johnson. Spagnuolo has been rumored as a potential defensive coordinator replacement for Juan Castillo with the Eagles. Source: Mac's Football Blog
