  1. The failed Chris Paul trade, the departure of a trusted teammate and the dissolution of a decade-long marriage. If that wasn't enough, the hits keep coming for Los Angeles Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant. The Orange County Register reports that Bryant sat out Lakers practice on Thursday due to a torn ligament in his right wrist. The paper reports that Bryant said he "should be fine to play" when the Lakers open their regular season by hosting the Chicago Bulls in Staples Center on Sunday. The Los Angeles Times reports that Bryant called his wrist injury "swollen and painful" but later added that, "It's always been in my nature to try to figure out a way to play." Source: CBS Sports

  5. The New York Daily News reports a source close to the situation said Giants DL Osi Umenyiora, who has missed the last three games with a sprained ankle, is unlikely to return Week 16 against the Jets. 6. After missing three games with a high-ankle sprain, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson returned to the lineup Sunday against the Saints to carry the ball 10 times for 60 yards. But following Minnesota's 42-20 loss, Peterson suggested that New Orleans cornerback Jabari Greer intentionally twisted his ankle one play before he ripped off a game-high 39-yard run. "I came into the game kind of expecting that coming back from a high ankle sprain," Peterson said, according to the Times-Picayune. "Guys are going to try to take their shots when we're on the pile and try to twist it up and things like that. "I felt like it kind of got overboard. I got up and kind of got in his face. Thank God I was able to keep my composure." This comes a week after Tennessee wideout Nate Washington accused New Orleans safety Roman Harper of being a dirty player after he grabbed Damian Williams' facemask. "Honestly, he's a dirty player," Washington said after their Week 14 meeting. "We watched film on [Harper], he's dirty. And I don't appreciate it, I'm going to step out in public and say it: He's dirty. That was dirty what he did, it's unfortunate that he grabbed the facemask -- at the same time you don't walk over a guy and nudge him with your knee. You don't do that. That's dirty. And honestly, that's a dirty player, flat out. This is not just one game. He's been doing it all season. And I'm tired of it. I hope the league did something about it." During his Monday press conference, Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said that Peterson came out of the Saints game "fine," which is more than we can say for the Vikings' season. Source: CBSSports
  7. Chicago Bears receiver Johnny Knox underwent back surgery on Monday and will miss the remainder of the season, according to coach Lovie Smith.Medical personnel carted Knox off the field on a stretcher in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to Seattle after the receiver -- scrambling to recover his own fumble -- absorbed a devastating hit from Seahawks defensive end Anthony Hargrove. 8. Are the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks getting their deserved respect entering the new season? Not if you ask Shawn Marion."We've gotten to the point where everybody started overlooking us and talking about everybody else and I kind of got [mad] about it," Marion said before Sunday's 106-92 preseason loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. "Y'all trying to take something away from us that we've worked hard for and we took."We earned everything we did last year," Marion said. "Everybody on this team earned the right to be addressed as world champions so everybody needs to address them like that." Source: ESPN
  9. New York Jets captain and wide receiver Santonio Holmes apologized to Rex Ryan for getting a penalty for a touchdown celebration with his team getting crushed by the Eagles, and the coach stood by his player on Monday."I'll say this about Santonio and every other player on this team, they got my 100 percent support and we're in this thing together," Ryan said. "Are we perfect? No, none of us are perfect. Obviously you wish that thing never happened, I don't think it'll happen again. But again, I've got his back, he's got mine and this whole team is that way." Source: ESPN

  13. Buffalo Bills receiver Steve Johnson has been fined $10,000 for his questionable touchdown celebration in last weekend's loss to the New York Jets.Sources confirmed to ESPN the amount of the fine, which was earlier reported by The Associated Press.Johnson declined to confirm whether he had been punished except to say he had an overnight courier envelope from the NFL waiting for him at his locker when he arrived for practice. Johnson left the envelope unopened because he expected to find inside formal notification of his fine.On his Twitter account, Johnson made light of the envelope by referring to it as "the Random FedEx Package in My Locker" and posting a picture of it.Johnson said he was done discussing the celebration -- and the national criticism he received as a result of it -- and is instead focusing on looking forward to helping the Bills (5-6) end a four-game slump on Sunday when they host the Tennessee Titans (6-5)."If I do, I get fined. But we've got to move on," he said. "It's the Tennessee Titans. I'm not really worried about a fine right now. It's part of the game. People get fined. But we've still got a football game on Sunday." 15. The Jacksonville Jaguars are headed in a completely new direction. And Los Angeles doesn't appear to be the destination.Team owner Wayne Weaver fired longtime coach Jack Del Rio on Tuesday after a 3-8 start and agreed to sell the Jaguars to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan. Weaver named defensive coordinator Mel Tucker the interim coach and gave general manager Gene Smith a three-year contract extension, putting him in charge of the coaching search.Tucker has been told he will get a chance to interview for the full-time job, Weaver said. The moves marked the most significant changes for the small-market franchise since its inception in 1993."It's the right thing at the right time and for the right reasons," Weaver said. "We deserve better; the community deserves better. We've been very average over the last few years. I take responsibility for a lot of that, making mistakes in some personnel things, but look positive ahead that this team is not far away from being a very competitive football team." Source: ESPN

Bobby Valentine will become the 45th manager of the Boston Red Sox, sources close to the situation said Tuesday night.Valentine, who has been in Japan on personal business and was offered the Red Sox job there, was scheduled to board a flight at around noon Wednesday in Tokyo (Tuesday night at midnight ET) and be in back in Boston by midafternoon. He was one of two finalists for the job, the other being Gene Lamont, a two-time manager currently serving as third-base coach for the Detroit Tigers.Lamont said in a text message Tuesday night, after ESPN had reported that he was no longer under consideration for the job, that he had not yet heard from the Red Sox."He's got it. I just spoke to him a little while ago," Hall of Famer Tommy Lasorda, who managed Valentine in the minors with the Los Angeles Dodgers, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. The club had no comment, spokesperson Pam Ganley told The AP. 19. Kevin Durant is receiving strong interest from three European teams.Maccabi Tel Aviv, Valencia and BBC Bayreuth are the interested teams.“I’m right on the fence with playing overseas and I’m about to jump over,” Durant said on Saturday.Durant is against taking the owners' current offer to end the lockout.“I know it’s not a good one,” Durant said of the proposal. “It’s not the one that we want. …If it’s not a good deal, I don’t see why we should take it, especially this late.” Source: RealGM
  20. On Sunday, David Stern released a letter to the players and included a copy of the revised proposal the NBA made to the union last week.Stern's direct communication to players was in reaction to "a great deal of inaccurate information published about the NBA’s proposal in the press and over social media.""While we recognize the right of any player to disagree with the proposal," Stern wrote, "there should be no confusion over its actual terms -- so we have attached it here for your review."
