Jesse Jackson Defends LeBron Against Cavs Owner

Recommended Posts

Jesse Jackson has come to the defense of LeBron James -- even though no one asked him to -- and compared Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert to a "slave master."

In a harshly-worded statement, Jackson took Gilbert to task for his open letter to Cavaliers fans which slammed LeBron's decision to sign with the Miami Heat. Jackson says, "He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave."

He goes on, "LeBron is not a child, nor is he bound to play on Gilbert’s plantation and be demeaned. He has been a model citizen and has inspired the children of Akron, Cleveland, the State of Ohio and the United States."

Not sure if Cleveland fans would rush to LeBron's defense right now.

There's no one in this world I dislike more then [expletive]ing Jesse Jackson. We get it, you're black. You aren't a slave, never will be, times have changed. Jackson is the primary reason for people being racist in this world, and is just as bad as any slaveowner.

Since when did slaves get opportunities to make millions of dollars every year?

Jesse Jackson is the one that's racist. He needs to remove himself from our country, no joke.

Al Sharpton can go right along with him.

People say what Jesse Jackson said is racist.

I don't see anything racist... can someone enlighten me?

Slave-master is more than just about black and white thing, although LeBron is black and Gilbert is white. You can be white but a slave and black but a master. Any race can be a slave thesedays and any race can be a master. You can be yellow (Chinese) or brown (Indian) and be a master/ slave. Why is this just about white and black?

I actually agree with JJ... this is an owner that wanted to pay his employee $120+ mil because Gilbert knows the money LeBron generates in return on the investment and the value he gives to the franchise is much more. A LOT MORE. Cavs' value with LeBron was about $400+ mil, without LeBron: $300 mil. Maybe Gilbert envisions to sell the franchise in the next 2-3 years? That plan is screwed now... I understand people going off steam when they essentially lost $100 mil with one person's decision. Picture yourself having an asset... it was worth $400 mil before and you know if things going static and do not improve, you want to sell it... and because your top employee decides to work somewhere else to represent another company, that very asset of yours plummets to $300 mil. Would you be mad? Of course.

To make it very simple, a boss tries offers $120 mil to his employee to stay at the company. He says glowing things about him to him. When the employee decides to work at another company, the boss becomes upset and says everything bad about him in public. What does it say?

It's like you going to a department store and the salesman's all nice to you, and you appear to be interested but decide to "just have a look around". And then 10 mins later, as you're walking out of the store without buying anything... the sales guy, initially convinced you're going to buy something, grows frustrated and curses you in front of other customers. Obviously a sales guy cares only about money and that is understandable but a sports owner like Gilbert, if he doesn't care about LeBron and only cares about making money off LeBron, should be more cautious and know how to play his card. I'm sure Gilbert is not the only one and there are many other sports/ business owners in the L and outside NBA who only care what the employees make for them. But if you're in this position, you have to play your cards right and not blatantly tell people basically all you care about is money.

The fact that Gilbert felt like he could bash LeBron as soon as he's no longer his employee, says a lot about the relationship between himself and LeBron Gilbert himself views... it's no friendship, only strictly business. He gives LeBron max contract and well paid salary but remember, LeBron more than just a very good player but a celebrity and approaching Tiger Woods as global sports icon gives back A LOT MORE. For every dollar you pay LeBron (if he works for your company), because of his status and productivity, he gives your company $20!

It shows Gilbert only cares about what LeBron makes for him. It's like an owner-slave thing. Does slave owner care about their slaves? No. They only care about the productivity and profits the slaves bring to him. Isn't this basically the relationship between Gilbert-LeBron according to Gilbert?

Slave-owner is more than just about race... black masters can have black slaves, white owners can have white slaves... true slave-owner with money making mentality wouldn't care if the color of their slaves is the same as theirs. Green = money is the color true slave-owners care about. Slave-owner is more than just about black and white... more than just America but other world as well.

Put yourself in LeBron position. Some rich guy wants you to work at his company for $120 mil for the next 6 years. Plenty of money right? Of course. That's 120 frickin million. But if you're really LeBron, you'd realize the value and return on investment you give back to the company... it's not only incremental but exponential return. Merchandises, tickets, popularity, shows, ads, joint ventures, job opportunities are all generated by you (if you're LeBron). $120 mil is nothing, at least compared to the value you give in return to your boss' company and popularity. Realize your value, you're a athlete with a great chance to reach $1 bil before your career ends. $120 mil sounds much to normal working people, but not to you if you're LeBron. When you, LeBron James, refuse his offer, the owner went from being sweet as pie to bashing you not only behind closed door but in public... what does it say to you about him, if you're LeBron?

You have a problem putting things in context. Obvious this is all about race when he is talking about a slave, and if you think otherwise, I don't know what to tell you.

This seems like a post that you would have made in the "Kobe intimidates people with his money" thread. .

You know very well what Jackson said was regarding a white and black issue.

Again, slavery is more than just about black-white. It's more than just about America.

Slavery had long existed when humans learned to exercise their power/ leverage to abuse others and force them to produce for them.

Gladiators back in the Julius Caesar days were all slaves. Julius was white... but he had white gladiators too (see Gladiators movie... frickin Russell Crowe is white).

No matter what race you are, if you're slave you're a slave... if you have a slave, you are a slave-owner.

It's more than just about race... this is stupid. It's more than just about America. Slavery existed long before the caucasians in America did it to the Africans who migrated there centuries ago... and after America abolished slavery, it still exists in other parts of the world TODAY...

It's more than just about white-black thing in America... it's about slavery in context. If you force someone to do something for you by physical or mental abuse/ threat/ leverage... you're making someone your slave in that one single situation.

Gilbert obviously did not try to force LeBron with his physical power/ mental threat. This is modern slavery where someone ties up someone else in contractual agreement with the pure intention of making money. Obviously, many people have that business mindset, and it is not wrong... and I do not fault Gilbert for having "money making" mentality... but what is wrong is the way he bashed LeBron in media. It exposed him. Basically he's saying "I ONLY CARE ABOUT MAKING MONEY OFF LEBRON" out loud. The thing is, if you're that type of business man, you do not say it. Problem with Gilbert? He said it. That's his only mistake and what makes this whole thing seem like a slave experience.

I'm not saying that slavery is about race because I know the first slave was owned by a black man. However, in this situation it was clearly about race, or he would not have used the words he used.

In this case LeBron is rich, but the white man is richer, so it was a terrible example by Jackson.
