Seattle Times: Should M's consider trading Felix to Yankees?

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times dares to ask the question: Should the Mariners listen to offers from the New York Yankees for Felix Hernandez?

 

If you haven't already lost your lunch, just hear Stone out.

 

The Yankees just lost out on Cliff Lee and watched the rival Boston Red Sox bring in Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford. They re-signed Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, but so what? How are they any better than last season.

 

In short, the Yankees are desperate.

 

Stone points out that in any trade talks, Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik would be bargaining from a very powerful position.

 

If he doesn't like the offer, he can just walk away. And if he does like the offer, it likely would involve the Mariners cleaning out the Yankees farm system and getting a major league talent as well. The Mariners could also unload a bad contract or two. Maybe Milton Bradley?

 

Stone is careful to point out this is all conjecture and food for thought. He quotes a tweet from the well connected Joel Sherman of the New York Post: "Asked multiple officials between last nite and today all say King Felix not available nor is anything else ace level in trade mart except Greinke, and #Yankees just don't believe he can handle NY."

 

So it doesn't look like the Mariners are interested in moving their cornerstone No. 1 starter. But in a rebuilding year, how much value does one dominant starter lend? Then again, the Mariners have always been good at one thing – public relations. Trading King Felix would be a disaster in that arena.

In terms of acquiring a starter, the Yankees have been looking at a bunch of low-risk-high-reward players, including Braden Looper and Fausto Carmona. Smart approach to take, when you have a range of these guys to select from during Spring Training and the season. Boston did a similar thing with their bullpen after they couldn't sign Teixeira, and it was, for the most part, successful.
