Owner Real Deal Posted February 19, 2011 Owner Report Share Posted February 19, 2011 There are examples of the zone defense not being called as illegal back in the 80s and early 90s, but the key was forcing that double, and having to leave a man open. Refs did call it all the time. The way Kobe throws his passes, he would find someone like Fisher open every play down the court, which means teams would have to give up that three (which is a big problem) or play Bryant with an individual defender (which is a big problem). It's obvious why this would be fantastic for him. The physical defense doesn't bother Bryant. He plays it himself, when someone tries to take him into the post. It's the zone (or some modified version of it, like Houston was trying to run with Artest and Battier) that makes basketball twice as difficult for him.
