Leafs re-sign Clarke MacArthur to a 2 year, $6.5M contract and avoided arbitration.

Carolina also traded Joe Corvo to Boston for a 4th round pick, presumably to make room for their earlier signing of Tomas Kaberle (which was 3 year, $4.25M per).

Coyotes locked up Keith Yandle to a 5 year, $5.3M per contract today as well.

EDIT: Tampa is supposedly close to signing Stamkos to a 5 year contract with an annual cap hit of around $7.4M. If this is in fact true, what a steal for the Lightning.

The biggest problem with winning the Cup is trying to sign dudes after. You can get the cheap vets looking for a ring but your own players become highly overrated.

I know the Blackhawks already had salary problems before but it's a great example. That's why the Red Wings are a freak of nature team.

The Bruins are actually in a pretty good spot. They didn't lose any players that would make a world of difference. They lose Kaberle, Ryder, and Recchi. They'll have money to re-sign Lucic, Krecji, Rask, Seguin, ect. when the time comes. It's also good that they have a lot of talented forwards in their prospect pool like Ryan Spooner, Jared Knight, and Jordan Caron.

They will also most likely have Savard's cap space to play with as well.

However, it is likely that Krejci and Lucic will ask for raises when their time comes, but I can't see either of them getting such a cap raise that it would dismantle the team.

Newport is notorious for drawing out their contract negotiations for their RFA players. Basically all of their notable RFA clients still have yet to sign a contract. They have Drew Doughty, Luke Schenn, Zach Bogosian, Brad Marchand and Josh Bailey who all are still unsigned and it took nearly a month to get Stamkos' deal done as well.

I realize what they are doing with the three defenseman as they are likely waiting for one of them to get signed and then negotiating with the others from there. If Schenn signs first they will likely turn to Winnipeg and demand the same contract for Bogosian and then use those contracts to demand more money from the Kings for Doughty. If they get a deal done with the Kings for Doughty first they will try to use that to get Schenn and Bogosian more money.

I don't get the hold up with Marchand and Bailey, though. The Couture signing should pretty much set the market for these two and took away most of their leverage. I realize that Couture signed for a discount but I don't see either the Bruins or Islanders being very open to paying either Marchand or Bailey more than Couture considering he is clearly a better player than the both of them.

A deal is going to get done for all of these players, that is for sure (Bogo is likely going to be the toughest as I doubt he wants to go to Winnipeg), but I do agree that it is kind of annoying at how long it is taking.

In other news, Marc Savard won't play next season and by all accounts, his NHL career is likely over. Terrible news as it always sucks to see a player like Savard have his career cut short due to injuries.
