Deron Williams tells the Daily News: "I will not op-in. Its not monkey see, monkey do."

Retweeted by Brian Windhorst

Deron Williams is a family man with four kids and a desire for stability in his life, not another year of uncertainty with his contract.

So Williams will not follow Dwight Howard’s lead into 2013 free agency by waiving his ETO. Instead, as expected, he will become a free agent this summer and explore his options.

“I’m not going to opt-in. It’s not monkey-see, monkey-do,” Williams told the Daily News. “Wherever I go is hopefully where I’m going to retire.”

So much for keeping him around.

He already said he's opting out a long time ago...

That never made sense to me. What does the new CBA have in it that makes sense of Deron Williams opting out this summer?

This is the only thing:

Except during the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, teams are prohibited from acquiring a free agent in a sign-and-trade if their team salary post-transaction would exceed the tax level by more than $4 million. The maximum contract length for a sign-and-trade is 4 years, and maximum annual increases are 4.5%.

And if that's what he's talking about...well, I'm worried if I'm a Nets fan, because that's telling me Deron Williams wants to be a free agent BEFORE a handful of teams are "prohibited" from getting him in a sign-and-trade situation.

Williams is referring to the extra years and money he'd get by signing a new contract instead of extending his current deal. According to the rules of the new CBA, Williams can earn roughly $70 million over four years by signing an extension, or he can get a five-year, $100 million deal by becoming a free agent and re-signing with the Nets. If he signs with another team, Williams can earn up to $73 million over four years. Either way, he’d lose money by taking the extension.

Personally, I think he's gone but him not opting-in has nothing to do with it. I can't even blame him for wanting to leave... this team blows

Amen.

And Billy King isn't a joke. His moves and draft picks have been positive and the Gerald Wallace deal was mainly an effort to keep Williams and that's all he can really do with Dwight staying.
