Patrick Ewing, Mike Malone To Interview For Vacant Bobcats Coaching Job

Recommended Posts

Orlando Magic assistant Patrick Ewing will interview for the Charlotte Bobcats head-coaching job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Bobcats are working to set up a meeting with Ewing once the Magic are finished in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Ewing is a close friend of Charlotte owner Michael Jordan, and several sources believe the Hall of Fame center will turn out to be a serious candidate for the opening. Charlotte will make pitches to Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan, but will likely hire its next coach from a pool of candidates like Ewing who have been less in demand for head-coaching jobs.

Ewing has worked eight seasons as an NBA assistant, including the past five on Stan Van Gundy’s staff with the Magic. Detroit Pistons general manager Joe Dumars interviewed Ewing for his franchise’s head-coaching job last spring and was impressed with him.

Charlotte officials flew to the Bay Area to meet with Malone on Tuesday. Malone is a coveted candidate who will likely be on the short list of most coaching openings this spring. e was the runner-up for the Warriors' job that went to Mark Jackson last year. The Warriors then made Malone the league's highest-paid assistant at $750,000 a year, hiring him to lead Jackson's staff.

Charlotte has to sell candidates like Malone and McMillan that Jordan is willing to make the financial commitment to build a winning organization. Charlotte will have to commit money to coaching salaries, as well as sell a plan to stock the franchise with talent.

Most of the better candidates will want to wait until the May 30 draft lottery to see if Charlotte will win the No. 1 overall pick to take Kentucky center Anthony Davis.

I highly doubt Malone will be interested in the job since him and Budenholzer are considered the two most highly regarded assistaints ready to make the jump to head coaching, and I'd be surprised if he took the Bobcat job as opposed to waiting for a better opportunity like Thibodeau did.

As for Ewing, he seems to have been wanting to get a chance at a head coaching job for a while now, but never come close to getting a gig. I could see him jumping at any chance, even if it is a lousy one like the Charlotte gig, simply to try and prove himself as an NBA coach. The connection with Jordan is obviously another factor.

Ewing will not be the next head coach of the Bobcats:

Team owner Michael Jordan recently called Patrick Ewing to inform the Magic assistant that he was out of the running for the Bobcats head coaching job according to Yahoo! Sports.

While the pair were longtime rivals on the court with the Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks respectively, they were friends off the court and that may have been Ewing’s undoing. Jordan has been widely criticized for having too many “yes” men working for him and a Ewing hire would have had more appearances of nepotism.

Ewing actually has a strong resume after having served under Stan Van Gundy as an assistant for five seasons.

Golden State assistant Mike Malone, ex-Portland coach Nate McMillan and Hall of Fame coach Jerry Sloan have all interviewed for the job opening.

The Bobcats will wait until after the draft lottery to begin the second round of coaching interviews.

Report: Bobcats rule out Ewing, interview Shaw

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- A person familiar with the situation says the Bobcats have met with Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw about their vacant head coaching position. The person spoke to The Associated Press Friday on condition of anonymity because Charlotte has not made its list of candidates public.

Shaw won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers - three as a player and two as an assistant coach. He's the ninth known candidate to interview, joining former head coaches Nate McMillan (Portland) and Jerry Sloan (Utah), assistant coaches Michael Malone (Golden State), Stephen Silas (Charlotte) Nate Tibbetts (Cleveland), Dave Joerger (Memphis), Patrick Ewing (Orlando) and Mike Dunlap (St. John's).

Ewing has since been ruled out. Bobcats executive Rod Higgins said Wednesday the team will hire someone "in a couple of weeks."
