NEW YORK—Boston's Kevin Youkilis and Detroit pitcher Rick Porcello were suspended for five games each Wednesday and fined by Major League Baseball for their roles in a benches-clearing confrontation.

The pair asked the players' union to appeal the penalties, which will be held off pending completion of the process.

Tempers had been escalating since Monday night, when Miguel Cabrera was hit in the top of the fourth and Youkilis was plunked in the bottom half; Detroit's Brandon Inge was hit in the eighth.

Nah he should of been suspended but its an absolute joke that they both got an equal amount of days, ridiculous and Youkilis is appealing it? wow..

Eh, maybe a fine because he clearly threw at Martinez to brush him back off the plate, but that [expletive] happens in literally every MLB game once or twice. Only reason he got suspended is because Youk lost his cool and charged the mound.

Haha he tried to hit VMart then succeeded at hitting Youk. Retalliation deserves suspensions as well, Porcello shouldnt even appeal cause hes a SP and can still make his start.

I disagree about him trying to hit Youkilis.
