Sixers waiving Allen Iverson?

There is a slight possibility that Allen Iverson(notes) could be sent packing by yet another team by the end of this week. The Philadelphia 76ers have got to decide by Wednesday if they want Iverson on the roster for the rest of the season or not - and the team is seemingly leaning toward keeping him, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Iverson signed a partially guaranteed contract with the Sixers and those become guaranteed on Jan. 10. There is a 48-hour waiver period that comes before that. Because Jan. 10 comes on Sunday, the league has apparently moved the date back to Jan. 8 and the waiver period now begins on Wednesday.

"Nothing is etched in stone, but I think it's going to happen," said head coach Eddie Jordan last night about keeping Iverson. Iverson has played nine games with the Sixers this season, and was averaging 15.5 points per game before last night. Arthritis in his left knee kept him out of four games and is keeping him to about 30 minutes per game that he plays in.

Whats the point in waiving him? The Sixers are going nowhere this season with or without Iverson, so they might as well keep him on the roster to help sell some tickets. This season is a lost cause, just keep Iverson for the rest of the season, sell some extra tickets and let the guy retire at the end of the year with the team that he gave his heart and soul to.

I honestly see no reason why they should waive him.

This. Simply no reason to not resign him.

Your title is very misleading. All that article says is that the Sixers still have a couple days before that clause in his contract kicks in (the one that makes it guaranteed for the rest of the year). As they have said all along, there is a very big chance they keep him around. Nothing has changed since the day they signed him, really.

Agreed, and I don't see why they cut him either. He'll drum up fan interest on a listless team. Don't expect him to be back next year though.
