He's a center.Nice effort compiling the articles, but none of it disproves my original point that it's just a stopgap. He's starting at the five, and it would be foolish to argue that because it's a fact. But isn't this just trivial semantics? He's a defensive specialist. He's 6'6. He's spent most his entire career as a forward, and he's never played any real, major time at the five until this year (when Houston has no centers). Hayes can play multiple positions, but I'm inclined to believe he's mainly a four. It really would be silly to exclude him from qualifying just because he's starting at center this one year. But yeah, he's no center, he only defends them and wonders the court as a player with no position on offense.He draws the best big whether it's Howard or Nowitzki, much like with defensive wings checking the best perimeter threat. No question in an ideal world Hayes is a power forward, but he's been listed as a center all year, and mostly defends the other team's centers this year. He is interchangeable, but adding him to best defensive center and best defensive power forward takes up a spot another player would occupy for recognition. It's like my top 30 lists I compile in the summer. Do I add Tim Duncan as the second best center AND the best power forward? I could. But people like set categories. And it gets other people, in this case good defenders, that might otherwise be overlooked. I think you can list them as either so long as it's reasonable. To me, Duncan is a power forward, but it wouldn't bother me if he's listed as a center in your article. Both make sense. Erick Blasco Posted April 3, 2010 Report Share Posted April 3, 2010 I'm just stating that its easiest to qualify a player in only one position, and then it becomes, do you qualify that player based on what he is in an ideal scenario, or what he is currently. Hayes has played Center since Yao went down. Do you look at him as a power forward because that's where he should be, or as a center because that's where he is? I qualify Hayes as a power forward because that's where he's played his entire career, and will go back to playing when Yao returns.
