The date has finally been set.

The Spectrum will be demolished during a ceremony on Nov. 23. The one-hour wrecking ball event will commence with a free viewing party that is open to the public, including a block party with dollar hot dogs and soft drinks.

Philly sports legends Bernie Parent, Bob Clarke and Julius Erving will attend the demolition.

“The Spectrum will always be a special place for so many people,” Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider said in a statement. “And, while the bricks and mortar may soon be gone, the memories will live with us forever. The Spectrum has meant so much to me, personally, and while it is a very sad moment, I reflect back on all of the terrific memories and excitement that the Spectrum brought to millions of people. It really gives me a thrill to have been a part of that.”

The demolition of the 43-year-old Spectrum also signals the start of construction for Philly Live, a retail, restaurant and entertainment district.

It will always be primarily known as the Flyers house and a concert venue, but the Sixers did play there for 30 years too. Unfortunately the Spectrum (as a major sports venue anyway) was a bit before my time, but I have still attended many events there. It will be missed!

I am also guessing that nobody on here will care, since I doubt anybody besides me and maybe Smitty has ever been there, but it's a pretty big deal around here so I figured I'd post anyway.

I know most of us remember the last game that was played, last season I believe.

Are you going to take pictures, if you're going that is.

Yeah after they announced it was going to be closed, the Sixers played the Bulls there for one final regular season game. March 2009 I believe.

And yeah I will definitely try to go and get pics. Don't know if it will be too exciting though. They are taking it down with a wrecking ball, not blowing it up.

Nah. It closed about a year ago and it has been sitting there unused ever since.

Doesn't it just cost money to demolish though? Might as well rent it out for events to help whatever the current arena is currently called

They kept it around for 15 years after the Flyers and Sixers moved out for that purpose. They had a minor league hockey team play there, indoor soccer, concerts, family events, and occasionally college basketball. Supposedly, the cost of maintaining the building just isn't worth it anymore. Plus, they are planning on developing the area, so the land the Spectrum is on will be pretty valuable. South Philly is basically just the stadium complex, and other than that there isn't anything to do. Ed Snider is planning on putting in a shopping mall type thing, restaurants, perhaps a hotel, etc. I am pretty excited for it TBH.

Definitely pretty sad for the 76ers. But the new arena will be sicker

Lol the new arena has been open for 15 years. But yes, this had to be done. Many great memories in that building but the property is too valuable.
