They didn't have a problem last season, nearly getting to the WCF without Gay.

Thats true, but they made it there because of Zach Randolph a lot more then Marc Gasol.

I shouldn't have said they would be in a worse place without him, that isn't necessarily true. I still think Rudy Gay is better than Marc Gasol though.

(...) If it was all about playoff teams and their best players, though...why is Deron Williams in it? Why Nash? And who is representing the Hawks? Johnson??? Josh Smith should be in there on the East roster. (...)

Hawks’ Joe Johnson out two games… All-Star Game, too?

This much we know for sure — the Atlanta Hawks will not have All-Star swingman Joe Johnson Wednesday against the Knicks or Thursday against the Magic. He has returned to Atlanta to get an MRI on his knee, the team announced. The next question — will he play in the All-Star Game on Sunday? Johnson was selected as a reserve by the coaches.

If the MRI confirms the original Hawks’ doctor’s diagnosis of tendonitis, then rest — and missing the game — seems the likely outcome. If it’s something more severe he is out for sure. I guess what we’re saying is he seems like he may sit this one out.

It's official -- Hawks' Johnson (knee) to sit out All-Star weekend:

ATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson will miss the All-Star Game because of tendinitis in his left knee.

The team says an MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis. Johnson will sit out the Hawks' next two games: at New York on Wednesday night and a Thursday night contest at home against Orlando. He'll also skip the All-Star Game in Orlando and all related activities this weekend, giving his knee additional time to rest.

NBA Commissioner David Stern will select Johnson's All-Star replacement and Atlanta's Josh Smith is one of several candidates.

Johnson leads the Hawks in scoring at 17.6 points a game and was named to the All-Star team for the sixth year in a row.

After the break, he'll be re-evaluated before Atlanta's next game against Golden State on Feb. 29.

Kobe a no-show to All-Star media availability:

Bryant was a no-show to the festivities, which was a disappointment to the 50-75 media members who had camped out at his table since the beginning of the Western Conference’s scheduled time, and stayed all the way up until the very end. About two minutes before it was all over, an NBA spokesman informed those waiting that Bryant was “ill” and would not be in attendance.

The delay in notifying the waiting masses of Kobe’s absence was supposedly due to the fact that Bryant was unreachable until that time, the spokesman said.

Not sure where this goes, but in a press conference, Stern basically praised the Nets for their work with the Barclays Center, said that Dwight going to Brooklyn would make the Nets-Knicks rivalry amazing, and responded to a question from Brian Schmitz (Magic reporter) by saying that a team shouldn't be a prison for a player, since it already has an advantage over the player's contract for the first seven years of his career.
